Hi looking for opinions on my situation. Done iati then on to hons business degree accounting stream. I've registered with acca and got exemptions leaving me with 6 exams to complete.

Problem is after a year of trying I still haven't managed to get related work. I'm currently in an administrative role with no opportunity to progress or change.

I'm a mature student with young family etc. Acca are now looking for fee for exemption and registration. It is alot of money to pay out if I don't get work experience.

Should I continue or what do you think?

You should absolutely keep going. You may not have the relevant work experience but if you pass your exams you put yourself in a great position.

It's a short term pain for a long term gain.

I would advise that if you are interested in becoming an accountant then continue with them.

I would point out though that you have to be realistic as to work. If you are currently earning say 30K a year in your job right now and you are trying to land accounting jobs in the same wage bracket it isn't going to work.

You'll be starting at the bottom of the ladder and with experience, time and completion of the professional exams you will rise in the ranks and in income.

I was talking to a chap one night who was working in accounting at the bottom of the ladder who wanted to be a financial controller one day, but switched to IT as the money was better and is pursuing the professional exams.

I think it's fair to say the chance of him getting another accounting position are slim so you have to be in it for the long haul there are no short cuts.

    Best of luck :-)
