I'm trying to start a business where I'll be self employed and I hope for it to get going in the next few months. I don't know much about advertising or promotion and I'm wondering does anyone have any tips in this area or know any companies that help people with advertising etc?
I hope to get a website up and running and I suppose a facebook and twitter page seems to be essential these days. Just having these alone is not enough I'm sure. As I say I really don't know much about all this so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Some basic info is required in order for anybody to be able to comment...
What type of business are you intending on starting for example?

And what sort of advertising budget are you going to have?

    Oh right sorry.

It's a sport related business and I'll have a budget of between 500-1000.

That is still too vague. Are you selling products? Will you have a physical location? Is it related to high profile sports or is it ground roots? Who is your target market?

500-1000 pretty much limits you to online unless its regional sports and you can get some local press. Facebook is the obvious one is that is going to be important at all. A small spend there can generate a lot of traffic for certain businesses.

Not selling products no. Hopefully it will involve gyms and schoools. A mixture of personal training and PE teaching.

Facebook for the training as you can target very specifically. For the PE teaching I guess you'd need to approach places doubt they would be looking to fill those roles via social media!!

Yes but what about things like sending leaflets to schools or things like that?

And do you know any company that assists in helping people advertise? I really don't have a clue how to go about it.

Lots of companies out there to help with advertising but they would take a big chunk of your budget. I have no idea of the best way to approach schools.

Ok, thanks for your help. I was looking up there to do a short course in advertising so I can do it myself but there doesn't seem to be many. Most are full time.

Definitely worth looking at. Go to your local enterprise office they run a lot of one day courses they might have one that suits. The start your own business course is well worth doing too.
