Is there such a device that you can plug into your Android phone to drop photos/videos/files onto. The Micro USB won't power an external HDD.

Taking the SD card out and putting it into a PC isn't a runner... no PC.

The solution must be fairly non techy. I can do the set-up, but the user is a technophobe, so no ongoing tweaking will happen.

NAS sounds like the job, he has home WIFI, but I'm worried he'll feck up the NAS unless it's truly drag and dropon hin phone.

There is no trust for online cloud storage.

Ideally, the solution would involve plugging a device into the micro USB socket and moving stuff from the internal SD and phone storage.

That's just one of many,you may find one cheaper.put the USB into your pc,load it with photos or movies.you need to download nexus media importer from the play store,I think its only a couple of euro,and you are good to go.there are smaller dual USB sticks available to the link above.

Apologies guys, I wasn't clear.

The device will be used for long term storage, so it needs to be stand alone and capable of storing quite a large amount of data. I would say 1TB would be the minimum size.

The Seagate wireless HD looks promising. But needs to have more capacity.

Keep in mind that there is no PC to transfer to. This device will be the only storage.

I have advised him that he needs to have multiple backups of important stuff - first pictures of the kid etc. - and that cloud storage shouldn't be ruled out as one avenue. I'm still working on that.

Edit: It looks like the Seagate drive is available with the required storage. Looks the best option so far.

It does have the option of being accessible over the internet, or limited to just local network.

I have a 3TB one and they are brilliant. Need to be connected to Ethernet, if that is an issue. You can lock it down to only be accessible over the network.

The standard app is very straightforward and can be set with a pin or just the first time set up.

You can USB another drive into the back to make it duplicate/back up.

Yes, sorry if I wasn't clear.

Ethernet cable into router. You cannot connect it to a computer via USB. It can only be connected using an Ethernet cable onto a router/network.

They are often on sale. Cheapest I have seen them was on WDs own site during a sale.
