NCT Fail due to Obstructed / Not Visible Chassis VIN

My car failed the NCT due to "Obstructed / Not Visible" Chassis VIN number. All other tests passed. It requires me to go back for a Visual at no charge. When I got home I searched online to find that you need to lift the carpet in the floor of the boot. I then found it with little effort. I'm annoyed that I have to drive all the way back, stand in a queue to show them what should be obvious.

At least you know for next time. To Be fair, could you not have searched online at the time?

Ideally they'd have known where to look of course.

What make or model of car?
Was it a common type of car or one that would not have come across before?
Remember that they don't have the internet available to google the instructions for every type of car.

I thought all cars are supposed to have the vin number visible through an aperture in the windscreen.

That location is not acceptable for NCT purposes.

That's right, they can only accept the one that's stamped into the chassis.

I think 206s have them in the boot anyway.

NATIONAL CAR TEST (NCT) MANUAL 2014
    Introduction

"The Vehicle Identification Number on the vehicle must
correspond with the information on the Vehicle Registration
File/Book/Licence Certificate. Where difficulty is encountered in
locating the Vehicle Identification Number it is the responsibility
of the presenter to establish the location of this information on
    the vehicle"

Don't blame me....but it's even in the introduction section of the NCT Manual. It's up to the owner of the Vehicle to know where the VIN is stamped.

I haven't a clue where my vin number is.... I'm driving a common irish car so the tester should know where it is.

I would think the NCT tester is a pr1ck for failing you on that.

How does he expect a regular punter to know things like that. Its his job to know exactly where it is FFS.

Unless of course the boot was full of junk..

One of the first things you'd do when checking a car before you buy it is checking the vin matches the paperwork.

I'm driving my eight car since I started driving and never even saw paperwork for any of the cars until I had paid my money and Shannon posted out the cert.

Why have you never checked to see do they match? Don't you not see the paperwork when you sign it when you buy it or do you let sellers forge your signatures?

Had you anything in the boot?

I checked the VIN on the windscreen when I bought the car and it matched the Cert & Report I got online for the Reg Number, so I assumed that was enough. I was not aware of the VIN also being stamped on the chassis in the boot. I had just 2 small bags in the boot which the tester moved neatly to the back seat of the car. I honestly was not aware the boot had to be completely empty. I wonder was I being penalised for this. The User Manual for the car only indicated the Windscreen one so I located the Chassis one from an online search when I got home. So the lesson I learned is to know exactly where the Chassis VIN is prior to taking it for an NCT and to leave the boot completely empty.

To be fair a couple of bags wouldn't be an issue to most testers and if he moved them then he wasn't penalising you for that.

Presumably it just wasn't where he expected it to be and they only have so much time to test a car.

    What make/model car is it?

Not exactly the same but a friend of mine had an NCT failure because the VIN plate was damaged or obscured in some way and he didn't know what to do next.
They just failed him but gave him no clue how to go about fixing it so he was a bit worried, then one day while listening to a phone in Q&A on the radio about the NCT this exact question came up, all it took was a simple five minute visit to a Garda station where they gave him some sort of paperwork saying his car was legit to show for the NCT.
They could easily have told him what he needed to do...

Vital that he can see the VIN to ensure the car is roadworthy, especially since it passed everything else!

I fairness, they don't test many of those :)

No need to be so smart, of course I don't let others forge my signature. The three private sales I made were from people and their cars I knew well, the other five were bought from reputable dealers.

Whos to say the car in the one that matches the reg plates on it without checking the vin?

If we both had the same car in the same colour, only mines in bits, without checkign the vin, we could put your car through twice with 2 different sets of plates.
