I just received a fine from the French authorities from a trip there back in late February, the fine is dated 24/04/15 with 45 days to pay the €45, before it rises to €90, I was apparently doing 99km/hr in a 90k/hr zone...........can anyone tell me if this will result in me getting penalty points on my Irish license? I was driving a rental car..............one other strange thing I noticed was that they have the wrong county on my address and it still got to me..........they have Co. Galway and I live nowhere near Galway.

No, you won't get any penalty points on your Irish licence.

If you decide not to pay it, most likely this will come back to car rental company you used, and they will charge your credit card.

Forget about, just don't go back to France again.

    Makes perfect sense to me.
But is it how it really works?

Because as you can see it varies country to country.
In Ireland, even if you name someone who was driving, if they can't get that person to pay, it comes back to you.
I'm not sure how it works in France.

I lost track of how many speeding fines I got sent to me in Ireland from all sorts France Spain Germany .
The only use I found for these sheets of paper was as bog roll but I found French paper the worst quality
    Never heard anything more since
Still drive through France in the same car sometimes been stopped for routine checks never twigged the unpaid fines
Thats because France is divided into some 99 departments each of them effectively a separate country .
Only large crimes like Murder or bank robbery or terrorism go to the central federal system .
Local departmental crime stays local such as shop lifting burglary joy ride theft of cars etc . So speeding fine stuff if you dont have the carte de se jour ID system and French drivers license well it probably inferior bog roll for you .
However if they Radar you and stop you your in pickle .If you dont pay the fine there and then they impound the car and charge €100 a day .If its serous speed like 200MPH like my mate did on 220MPH capable Motor bike on highway they will drag you in front of Judge after you have spent several months on remand in their free hotel called jail .If you hire good expensive French lawyer who costs a lot of money but is pally with the judge on the golf club whatever you get a big fine .If you take free legal aid and cheap skate it you get several months in the nick but time in the remand might be good for it .My mate had lots of cash and somehow got out of jail in few days money talks in France.

Its like Germany there is no speed limit on the Autobhann motorway isn't exactly true .The recommended speed limit is 130KPH .They wont radar you fine you of you go faster .However if you crash doing 200KPH plus they will probably throw the book at you for exceeding the recommended speed limit probably with time in the jail . Its so easy to get speeding fines in town centers in Germany so many cameras but again make good bog roll paper unless you get stopped and they check something . I always use different Irish plated car when I go Germany too linked up system

Spain system is like the French system there are some twenty region Catalonia Andalusian etc all in reality separate countries for the police system.North Spain the cops are SOBS fine you for nothing no seat belts you name it .South Spain its more easy going .I tend not to spend too much time in North Spain driving the fines are mostly on the spot.Cops are hiding behind bushes with radar guns cameras all sorts .

Italy is mad.My mate borrowed the Porchse of the house he was looking after and he was way over the limit coming back late at night .Cops stopped him on motorway .They pulled up alongside and said lets race so he did and he left the cops Alfa Romero in the dust .

I got other mates that will send the speed fines back after they use it as bog roll but I dont do that one use is enough for me

    Jed
