feckers, thanks for reply, was doing 35 in a 30, annoying. last one was 56 in a 50, so I was hardly going mad or joy riding.

AND YES, I know I did wrong(just about) so I don't need the whole, just pay it, you were speeding, you broke the law, you should be sent to jail, you should be ashamed of yourself, how dare you give out about points etc etc

Anyone know if having 5 penalty points would affect an insurance premium by much.

late 30's. no claims ever made before

Most were okay with 2 or less I think, once you go over this, you will see an immediate increase of premiums. Have you notified your insurance yet of this speeding incident.

no, as I only got the letter today like.
When should I notify them, now or only when the points go on my license

You should contact them and tell them - if you don't and later have a claim they could use this as non-disclosure of a material change to the circumstances under which you were insured, in an attempt to avoid paying out.

    It'd be unlikely, but possible.

Put in your details into your insurance company's online quote system and get a quote, then do it with penalty points and compare. I know AXA's online quote system doesn't ask how many penalty points you have, but they may ask you before giving you your insurance. So perhaps come renewal time try to go with them.

My mate got done for speeding twice last year and his premium went up €140 as a result, think his premium is about 700 now. Some of that may have been general increases anyway.

I don't have points but I was looking at my policy the other day and I was looking at the breakdown of the final cost.

It said 33% discount for having no penalty points. That is with aviva. I would think once you hit 5/6 territory there would be 0% discount.

right, so could be a queer whack on me premium so, b@llls

in other countries, *I think* you just pay the fine and that's it, dosent affect your insurance.

I have no bother paying the fine, its just when it fooks up your insurance also is the thing that annoys me

Only someone in insurance or someone with 5 point+ would be able to give you a realistic answer. Even then it will depend on the insurer. And yes notify them now, unless you plan on contesting it court. In which case you can declare it pending that outcome.*
*Check your policy to be sure.

Make sure to let your insurance company know as soon as possible about the penalty points. God forbid if you were in a car crash, your insurance company will go through every single detail and if there is any little thing that isnt correct then they may not pay out.

For example, a family member was in a very serious car crash before and the insurance company went as far as checking was the occupation of the named drivers correct. Kinda crazy but they would do anything just so they dont have to pay out!

So on the older system, 2 points was the norm and if you didn't go above this magic 2 points, supposedly your insurance premium wasn't really affected.

Now 3 points is the norm. Do insurance companies look on 3 ponts now in the same way as 2 ponts above were looked on in the past.

Its probably not very fair but at the end of the day all the insurance company see is that you are basically halfway to losing your licence, solely due to speeding

What was the date of detection in this instance?

I am trying to ascertain the timeframe involved from date-of-detection to date-of-notification, which was 8th May in this case.

That wouldn't be unusual if they wanted to be sure the car was only being used for social and domestic purposes (i.e they suspected it was being used as a taxi, or pizza delivery, etc)
