I have been given 44 acres of land from my father - Are there any basic payment of other funding options available to me if I start farming the land? I rang teagasc but they refused to answer my questions as I am not one of their clients on the system Thanks in advance

Just for starters do you have the green cert completed or other relevant agri courses.

These may seem like very probing questions but does have a bearing on what you are eligible for due to the requirement for many schemes to be a 'farmer' as defined by the gov

To answer your questions - I am in my mid twenties - have a full time (low paid job) and do not have any agriculture qualfications. Thanks in advance.

Find a local independent farm advisor. He/she will advise you. They cost a few quid but are well worth the money.

Will you be liable for more inheritance tax than you might have been if you had got a green cert etc?

you are against the clock as the first thing you have to do is apply for a herd number and submit a BPS application.........29th May deadline

this will allow you to be classified as a farmer

Green cert is not a couple of months unless u go to full time college, or on line if u have 3rd level education , I'm doing part time course at moment and level 5 takes 2 winters and level 6 takes 1 and 1/2 so we have been told

Get the Farmers Journal every week and read it carefully - this week see pages 5,14,15 and 71 at least.

Might be worth getting a few back issues. You could try ringing a journalist there.

For the national reserve and young farmer scheme youl be ok by just applying for the green cert( although u have to conplete it ;) )
But u can't do this without a herd no. Get this ASAP.
    Talk to an advisor ASAP.
    What county are you in?

Teagasc are full they won't take you on. You need a private one,
Use google to find one on your area

Great you have an interest in carrying on farming the land unlike some I know who have sold up and drank it.

    +1

make an appt with a good tax advisor

as it stands now you won't qualify for agri relief but you should qualify for business relief....the catch being that all of the land must remain in your name for 6 yrs

go to your local DVO and find out when is the earliest you'd get a herd #.

best of luck with it and good to see you've an interest in it

Has your father claimed SFP on this land? If so he should have received the BPS application pack, maybe complete this and claim in his name for this year as closing dates are fast approaching. I think the young farmer/ new entrant/ national reserve/ schemes are closed now. You need to talk to an agri adviser asap.
