Trying out for PP again on Sunday. Not bringing any game to the trials unfortunately :-( L2 W0 D1, all down the full 18.

I was in early trials but my lowest handicap last year was 13, not playing near that now and there are eight 12s so I was cut

So they want 12's alongisde 15's?

Dont see that as being the utopia to be honest. What club is it Denis?

It depends a lot on how a pair play together irrespective of their handicaps and the 'magic' 27

How do most clubs do trials? Pair's that want to play together or what they think will work. Can't see the point of cutting the 13 handicaps unless there were no 14 handicappers in the club.

It's Bandon - I suppose I should have been clearer, they have more lower players than higher ones, I think it was nine and seven so nobody to match me up with and not playing well

We got paired up and it was a matter of seeing who worked best together then. Have to say I got on well with my partner despite meeting him for the first time on the first tee!

Iv been away for a few years so I'm not in a position really to comment on how that have got to this position really. Our lads were reasonably happy in how they were playing but was simply not good enough against them.

Takes a lot of dedication from the players to play that many practice rounds and also the funds from the club to do it anyway.

Played Pierce Purcell qualifier today in New Ross. 14 teams played stroke play with 4 to qualify for matchplay tomorrow. Delighted that we got through. The 4teams are Wexford, New Ross, Callan and Waterford.

What was the scoring like? What was needed to qualify?

    Wexford 350
    New Ross 353
    Callan 360
    Waterford 363

Great shooting by Wexford in particular. There were some savage high scores in. The wind was very much across you all day which made driving tough. We witnessed one man drive out of bounds on 1st. His partner reloaded and drove ball 2 out of bounds. First man hit another drive (number 3) which looked like it was heading o.o.b again so they hit a provisional. You guessed it, another definite o.o.b! They found ball 3 and proceeded to take 12 on a par 4 opening hole. As one man remarked, Pierce Purcell brings out the WORST in golfers!!

4 90's nearly always has a chance in the PP.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 255 ✭✭BOB81

Played in the qualifying round in longford yesterday - first time playing it and enjoyed it i must say. We had 90 with a couple of short putts left out there and that was the best score from my club - wind was brutally strong at times. When we left the course the best combined total in was 363 from longford themselves. We missed out on the qualifying by 13 shots anyway - 4 scores under 95 was what was needed on the day but not to be. Due to last minute team changes only met my partner on the first but it worked out ok!

Fantastic stuff. I guess if you figure out a good way of playing interclub golf, you can repeat that formula successfully accross the different competitions.

Amazing considering it is handicapped (how does handicap work in that ?)

That many matches are so one sided ?

Every sport and golfing legends have a fall at some stage.

Hard to stay at the top - extra hour in bed - missed practice .

Then , it is just gone.

They can retire and regale about wins to each other ,over stunning West Clare views.

Has the team changed much since last year or the year before ?

Only had 4 of last years team, had no subs over 4 rounds, beat Woodstock on 19th in last game.

Woodstock had a stronger team than them again this year but threw away in the deciding game just like last year.

But just like their Bruen team last Wednesday, they are in for another big beating from Nenagh in the regional final.

Aboy Tippsy! You must be cultivating a few of your own! Gotta love the Purcell. The perfect stage for the elderly former category 1 golfer to relive his former glories and flex those short game muscles.

From what ive heard Spanish Point were all cut 3 shots each for winning the Purcell last year and the same the year before apparently. All their low lads from last year are single digits now but got beat badly by Nenagh in the Bruen few weeks ago.

Apparently the pairing that won the deciding game on 24th last night came back from 3 down and another one of their pairings came back from 4 down to win on 18th.

It isn't the first time they've battled back from dead and buried situations, they must have some bottle under pressure in fairness. I had heard from lads that seen them in Clare they had a few very average players this year.

Anyone know where are the Munster Finals on this year?

Newcastle West could be the dark horses if theyre still in it, think the might have won a purcell a few years ago?? and only got narrowly beat by Spanish point in a munster final the year after that. Experience is a big thing at the level.

Was watching Spanish point and nenagh last night Spanish point very lucky to get through some very weak guys in areas in fairness they done well to pull it off but not of the standard that's required from here on in the guys (high handicappers) are now gone and this is the reason I see turtles turning them over if you want a bet back the Tipp boys to give the Spanish point lads another hiding

Go Spanish Point. Am at the other end of the country, but hope plenty of Boards>Sports>Golf folk head along to support them in their next match. Great stuff and doing great things for interclub golf competition.

Is there any other sport where repeated success only tarnishes the first one ? Normally it is the reverse, and renown and greatness is enhanced by backing up wins showing the first one was not a just lucky streak.

Interclub handicap team golf relies on everybody pretending that it is a level playfield and winners are meritorious. Key to this, is that having had your win, you fade away into the back ground, while other clubs take their turn to take the pennant, maintaining the illusion that they just happened to be the best team in that year. But Spanish Point are busting this illusion wide open by refusing to conform with this deceit. Kudos to them for refusing to roll over, but instead, play the same game year after year, exposing the omertà and sham that are such competitions.

Really rooting for a hat trick for them.

    Tricky one for you GUI.
