3.5mm extension cable not working as expected

    Hi,

A bit of a strange one...

I have a laptop connected to a subwoofer. This in turn connects to 2 little speakers via a cable that splits into two (one for each speaker). The speaker end can't be removed, it's moulded into it. All cables are 3.5mm.

I bought an extension cable with the idea of extending the cable that runs between the speakers and the sub. When I connect this, the sound does work but only higher sounds, it's not the same quality at all.

At first, I blamed the cable so I took off the extension cable and used it to extend the cable between the laptop and the sub. This works perfectly.

I've compared the tip of the speaker cable to the tip of my extension cable and they appear identical. Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Your cable is to long.
The signal strength may only be set for the length of the cable. Extending it weakens the current

Thanks Sol, never thought of this scenario. I'll just have to put up with it in that case

The cables to the two smaller speakers are wired differently than a standard 3.5mm stereo lead. Can you post the make model of the speakers ?

If the cable were too long it would have effected the lower level signal more than the higher level speaker signal so I'm sure that's not the issue. Check the cable from the speakers carefully, is the plug a stereo plug or are there actually 4 contacts instead of 3 ?

Look at these 2 pictures, can you see the difference ?

Tell us the make/model of the speaker system and we can be more accurate.
