Form P50

I'm planning on moving from PAYE into contracting (self-employed) with a few months break between.

As I've worked as a PAYE for the first few months this year am I correct that I should send in the P50 to claim back tax (after 8 weeks have passed)?

Is there any point in sending in the P50 if I should decide to get a PAYE job instead if the contracting search doesn't prove fruitful?

Or is P50 only of use if one remains unemployed the rest of the year?

Anyone? Does sending in the P50 (with P45) mean I will be on emergency tax if I decide to go back to PAYE rather than self-employed?
