    Hi Guys,

Helping out a colleague, he has an international driving license issued from Russia, when i rang axa they said they don't insure them, and they'll need to aquire an irish license, however on other forums it says that he can get 12 months insurance before needing to apply for an Irish one.

Anyone know an insurance company that does accept them? Any other details be much appreciated.

International Driving license is usually a translation of his Russian licence - it's not a licence in itself.
So that's probably the crux, they won't accept a non-Irish or non-EU licence.

Tbh, ring a broker or three and see what they can help with.

How long has he been living in Ireland? If more than 12 months, his Russian licence will not be valid for driving in Ireland.

    Non-EU Driving license, Game over.

His only possibility would be a rental car, but as said previously its not valid if he's been living here more than 12 months.

Not really (unless the person has been resident here for over 12 months or - in case of Russian licence - his visit is not temporary):

Point being no Insurance company will touch them and they don't really have to either.

He can drive for 12 months on his Russian licence but there's no requirement for an insurance company to quote him, unless he goes the ombudsman route after the 3rd refusal and gets phone number quotes.

    Now I get it.

Ireland (as a country) would allow the op's friend to drive for a year, but the insurance companies prevent him from driving...

Expect a quote of €10000 after 3rd refusal. This isn't even funny anymore if you think about this...
