    Hi all

I arrive in Dublin on 21 June and intend to buy a motor (Opel Zafira) that day.

    3 qns

1/ Can I get insurance over the phone when I buy?
2/ Do I need a ROI bank a/c or will a NI one do?
3/ Which company would you recommend?

    Any advice would be great

    Thanks

    Anthony

Most probably but I would get some online quotes before. That won't cost you anything.

I'm pretty sure that if you have a credit card it will do.
I'll be more worried at being able to give a ROI address.
Also if you want any NCB to carry around, you better have the paperwork ready.
I suppose you're coming from the UK so it may be easier but if you're coming from the continent, you may have some difficulties.

They are all trying to rob you anyway. I'm using First Ireland as a broker for the car (I think the insurer is Zurich) and Liberty for the motorbike and never had problem with them (never had an accident with the car, and Liberty sorted it out quickly when I crashed the bike.

If you have an address in the republic, and a valid license should be doable. Won't be cheap or easy, but will be doable.

If you want to pay by Direct Debit, they likely will require a bank a/c from the republic.

Literally any of them. So many factors affect the price from anyone of the companies, it's impossible to recommend any one company to any one person.

Best advice? Start ringing around now to get quotes and make sure you're not in for a shock on the day.

I have a NI BOI bank a/c, I could use my aunties address in ROI, I have a BOI Maestro card and a drivers license.

I was a named driver for a year on my Mums (AXA) and Dads (dunno) cars

    Am I missing anything?

Is it a full licence ? Irish, UK or other EU ?
If not full licence, you're in trouble.
If 'other EU', you probably will need to shop a lot.

Expect to have to pay in excess of 2000 € even with full UK/Irish licence.

Maestro should work and you've a ROI address to put on so that should work too.

It looks like you already have a car in view so go to any insurance site giving online quote and request one.

You don't have to put you real name/phone/email/address.
Just use a close enough address so that you get the correct rate.
The Liberty Insurance online quote site is fairly easy to use.

From your other posts, looks like you will have a UK licence.
If it's a full one, you are most probably good to go.

Excess of 2000 € still applies though (I may be wrong and all this ...)

I have a full UK license and I am a 38 yo male (I never claimed on any insurance) I intend to buy a 1.6 opel zafira and you estimate it'll be 2000 euro a year

I dont mind paying insurance but that seems like excessive and bordering on criminal

comprehensive with liberty is 1250 euros

3rd party fire and theft is 930

    2 curious things to note

    1. they offer an 11% discount buying online
2.there is a govt. levy and an insurance prem tax

Welcome to Ireland, this is why everyone pays a government levy on their insurance policies here:

Are they allowing for your UK no claims bonus?

Some insurance companies do allow for a UK NCB so keep an eye out for that.

    1. Yes, you can also do it online
    2. No, SEPA means you can use any EU bank account, would be handy if its in Euros though so your Insurance isn't a different price every month, also a UK Bank will charge you for the transaction.
    3. Try all of them
