Wondering if any one found the corolla(current model) sluggish to pick up.Was with family member today interested in a 2014 one with 12k miles. He found it ok but I felt it needed lot of gear changes to maintain revs.It has 90 bhp which is on the low side,i felt. Most comparable diesels have 105bhp upwards.Other than that ,car wasgood handler, and well put together.

What other 1.4 diesel cars have 105bhp or more?

Not too many manufacturers have 1.4 diesels in a car that size.
The first 1.4 D-4D came out over 10 years ago, and it was 90bhp then. Only the addition of a 6 speed gearbox has helped matters.
They'll be adding the BMW 1.6 soon, which would actually make a reasonable car out of the Corolla. It's the fact that they have such a limited lineup of engines in this model that ruins it. (That and the comical standard equipment)

The OP is comparing the 1.4 litre D-4D diesel to rival diesel engines with 105bhp but I'm assuming they are 1.6 litre and not 1.4 litre. VW also offer a lower powered 1.6 litre with 90/95bhp in the Golf. It's not too long ago they were selling the 1.9 TDi with only 105bhp also. Ford's entry level Focus 1.6 TDCi has 95bhp too. Ditto with Peugeot and Citroen.

Also as long as Toyota continue to offer the 1.4 D-4D engine in the Corolla and Auris then it will probably outsell the BMW 1.6 litre engine about 9 to 1 imo. The Irish like their cheapest entry level engines. The 1.6 will sell well in the facelifted Avensis alright because again it will the entry level version. Same goes with the likes of the Passat and Mondeo, 1.6 diesel outsells the larger ones many times over.

Agree with that ,bazz.witness how rare to see the 2.0 litre engine in passat here.I think the 1.4 is hard t compare directly and have a 1.6 105bhp octavia myself which is no ball of fire-but would be a heavier car than corolla.Just think that toyota badge is sometimes all buyers in ireland want to see and new engine line up badly needed as competition havent been standing still-new 2 litre engine in jetta and new 1.6 110 and 136 bhp engine in astra since january alone.

In fairness the 1.4 d4d is a very good engine and is very refined even by today's standards.

I think for everyday driving it's perfectly fine. If your looking for something with more power I think you'll have to look beyond 1.4 and probably 1.6 diesels too.
