Disposing of an E240

My dad has a 2002 W211 E240 Avantgarde and the gearbox has started acting up- intermittent limp modes and EML's- he's had a couple of opinions on it that it's probably electronic.

Otherwise it's blue, has something like 110k miles, partial history, has NCT but no tax, it's very clean and straight except for the opaque headlamps and need for a valet. He's the second owner and has had it since 2008.

He knows it's a white elephant but it owes him nothing and he knows it might be at the end of its life. However, he probably just wants rid and he may not even replace- he has his van and the use of my mother's car.

Any opinions on how best to get shot of it- scrap it? Flog it? Swap it?

Someone will take that off your hands - no bother. Stick it on Done Deal.

List the faults stick it up on Donedeal with plenty of pictures.
Realistically it won't fetch much but it's giving car a shot a 2nd life and more than scrap yard will offer

    Stick it into the auctions.

Didn't think of that. It might be a cool way to do it.

Is there much to know? Can a civilian just enter a car?

Yeah. I have worked in auctions, bought at them and sold at them - it's a hassle free way of doing things.

Merlin would be the busiest auction around and the one you would be most likely to get half decent wedge for the car in - though as you know yourself for an 02 E240 won't be all that much!

Cool. I think I'll mention it to him!!

Anyone willing to put a rough idea of value? Even a pessimistic value?

Toothpaste and elbow-grease for the headlights, fault-code scan or the limp and EML?

From the description you gave I'd guess <€1k

E240s just aren't worth much at all due to the tax compared to the E200K -2.6 tax vs 1.8 :(

VRT export refund would be €630 by the way...

Does that include deducting the admin charge? (€500 or whatever it was)

    Also interesting.

I've seen lots of cars that would 'suit export' on Done Deal but wondered exactly what it means- like are there people that do this for you or are you relying on finding a punter yourself?

Where do these export cars go anyway?

With gearbox fault declared, it's surely only worth a few hundred. At auction, I couldn't see it going more than 500.

That's kinda what we were thinking. Would you get more on DD?

Well we see reasonable working versions of these around 2001 going for 800 to 1200. With a gearbox issue, well it can then be worth little. Could suit someone with working, crashed or rusted one though.

There's another space in the drive! He got €600 in his paw for it today. He got in tow with someone involved in trade with an interest in Mercs. I'd say both were happy with the deal and hopefully it'll find a sympathetic new owner and it'll last another few years.

He got the price of it I'd say given the fault.
