Cost to change 2008 e92 320d to 2013 f10 520d

    Hi there,

Thinking of changing my 2008 320d msport coupe and looking for advice/opinions.

It has 50k miles (81k kms) and I do about 10k miles annually, max. I bought it in 2012 from BMW with the two year Premium Selection Warranty so the car is now out of warranty. It's been serviced by an independent (BMW specialist) since I've had the car and has a full BMW (dealer) service history before I bought it.

I do love the car but after 3 years starting to fancy a change but sticking with BMW.

Q1: Can anyone in the trade give guidance as to what a trade in value on mine would likely be with a BMW dealer? I don't want to waste a dealer's time heading out for a test drive etc unless I'm serious about changing and I'm on the fence at the moment. Carzone has similar cars asking €18k but I think that's unrealistic as a trade in, or even achievable sale.

Q2: I can see a 520d msport auto (2013) asking €41,650 - what cost to change would I be looking at here?

Q3: Am I mad to go from a 320d coupe to a 520d saloon when I actually don't need the space and probably won't need it for 2-3 years?

Q4: I like the 420d (and don't need a saloon so can stick with a coupe) but these are still asking €46k - €50k for 2014 models and I don't really see many second hands coming up for a year yet so that could keep prices strong enough. Do you think these will fall to ~40k this time next year? I'm thinking the 4 series is really just my car with newer styling though so I reckon after a couple of weeks I might not even appreciate the difference and would regret spending the money?

Q5: My other thought is hold the coupe until 640d's come into the ~40k range but wondering if that's 2 years or farther away?

I can't and doubt anyone can answer q1 or 2 accurately. Go to a dealer and get a test drive and a price. That's what they are there for. I drove an e92 320d for 6 years and now drive a f10 520d auto so have made that change.

If you don't need the space I really would not spend 25k or whatever it is going to be to change. However, if you have an itch to change and fancy the 5 series go for it. As with most of these things only you will know if its wprth it to you. The auto is great but it is a bigger heavier car and is significantly less efficient than the e92. Also the f10 is very common.

I can't comment on the 4 series. Prices still seem very strong for what it is imo.

    25-28k plus your own car.

OP does it have to be a 13 reg F10 520d?

This 2010 530d looks superb, very nice spec on it, good bit of power and alot cheaper to buy.

I have an F10 520d auto myself and my only regret is that I didn't hold out for a 530d. The 520d is no slouch but it's a big heavy car and the 2.0 litre engine needs to be worked harder to get the most out of it in my experience.

If Kceire figure is accurate, then you will also be paying interest on that 25-28k. If I am not mistaken, you current car has the same engine as the F10.

Thanks a mill for the replies.

25k is about what I'd hoped for, 28k is more than I'd like but I understand there has to be margin in it for the dealer too!

I think I'd find the 20d a bit 'same' ish regardless of trading to a 3 / 4 / 5. I'd say the 5 gives me the biggest change - a 3 cabin is probably similar to what I have, and the 4 I'd expect wouldn't be a million miles away from what I have now, albeit a lot more money so I'm probably leaning towards the ?30d or ?35d engines.

I'd prefer a 5 or a 6 for the biggest change from what I have.

The issue I have with this though is the 30d or 35d's didn't sell in big numbers so are very scarce and most of what is out there seems to be higher mileage and/or private or independent dealers. I took a look at the 530d posted and two thoughts; I'd prefer to go main dealer for a warranty and ideally, would prefer to pick something up with a lower mileage also.

I realize 80k miles isn't huge at all but given mine is 50k would prefer to trade to a newer/lower mileage car if possible. Reason being, I have the N47 engine and the timing chain issue is at the back of my mind.

    Are the 30d/35d's also affected?

If I traded to a newer 20d I'd only do it in the network to avail of the 2 year warranty offered.

Just hesitant to spend that kind of money without a main dealer warranty.

Does it need to he a BMW? There's more choice in Audi A7s if you want more than a 4 cylinder and they are beginning to drop in price too compared to this time last year.
