Which manufacturer has a reputation for good petrol engines?

I could be in the market for a car in the Golf/Focus/Mazda3/Ceed/Civic segment in the near future, and might be looking at one around 2010/11.

It will be a petrol, as it won't be doing big miles.

Are there any engines that stand out as the one to consider? I know in the past that I've read bad things about VWs petrols.

    Any advice welcomed.

Sorry to add a query to this thread OP but I am also in the market for a hatch back car made around 2011. The budget is no more then €14,000 and after initially narrowing down the choice to a Honda Civic and VW golf I am now considering Seat Leons and the other aforementioned cars the OP posted. I plan on getting no more then a 1.4 litre car and it will be used for a shortish round commute of about 27km to work so very little mileage. I will be holding onto it for about 5 years max so I would like it to have a bit of a resale value and I hear the VW golf would be the best for this. Also the reason I am planning to get a 1.4 litre car is that I have not driven for about 3.5 years and I want to keep the insurance premium down and build back up my NCB. Any advice would be appreciated and apologies once again op for going off topic a bit.

Out of that list the civic, honda makes great petrol engines and great cars too. Go for the 1.8 ivtec if possible.

I was looking at Civics, but need to be able to get 1 car seat and 2 boosters in the back, and images I've seen look like it would be a non-starter.

Any owners care to correct me?

I'd say most cars in that segment will struggle with that.

Well our 2013 Focus handles it ok.

As for the Civic, the photos of the back seats made it look like its more a 2 seater in the rear. Perhaps that was the 3dr car, must check out the 5dr version, see if its similar.

Alfa Romeo Guilietta with the 1.4 twin air Turbo engine , makes 140 Bhp standard , looks fantastic , hatchback and has plenty of room in the back and boot.
