Been looking on net for these answers and not getting solid answer, I'm buying a van caddy or similar and looming to see how much to tax it, is it still a flat rate of 333 for vans? Also is it straight forward to tax a van on a private insurance policy as I remember people having difficulty a whole back with the tax office looking for vat numbers!

you cant tax a van commercially on private insurance has to be commercial tax commercial insurance or private tax private insurance

Is this defo the case now?
I only ask because I've had a couple of vans over the years which were always insured privately and I always taxed them per the commerical rate of around 300 or so but I remember bout a year ago they clamped down this and was wondering if it is still possible to tax it at the commerical rate while insured privately
    Cheers

Untrue, you can have commercial tax with private insurance no bother. Problem is you need either a vat no. Or a herd no. for commercial tax.

Try to get the person you are buying it off to tax it for the year, then you can worry about renewing it down the line.

Did you have to show anything like vat number or anything to tax it commercially?

I had to get a form signed by the gardai saying that I was using the van for goods.

I just put my prsi number in where the vat number goes.

I have a separate policy for the van insurance and a private one for the car.

My retired father has a van for fishing / the dogs etc. It suits him better than a car. Tried to tax it privately - "computer says no" basically in the tax office. He explained at the counter his predicament when taxing for the first time and the girl just said it's fine, tax it commercial. Is it a case that the system just doesn't get that people may have vans for social and domestic?

Wanted to know for sure so went into tax office yesterday, girl said if van insured privately it would be taxed privately it would only be taxed commercially if being used for commerical purposes and for that proof would need to be shown I.e vat number/herd number/some ce insurance number? and it has been like that for a good while she said

But then there are people saying they are defo insured privately and taxed at the commerical rate no problem so there must be a way around it?

Go to the tax office and hand in your paperwork. When they question it say yu are a sole trader and offer your pps number. If they refuse claim discrimination of minorities with a thick traveler accent. Get your tax disc and leave.

Yes, and that's technically how it should be done, if the van is mainly used commercially, but has some private usage as well.
