I completed the Belfast Marathon yesterday and am hoping to do my first 50km race in Portumna in 6 weeks. I am looking for peoples opinions on what training i should be doing from now to then considering i am just looking to finish it without breaking any records!! I followed a 16 week program leading up to Belfast to break 3:30 so am hoping to reduce the intensity of training to just get round the 50km. Any thoughts?

6 weeks isn't a lot of recovery time, so don't expect too much in Portumna. if you want to do the 50k as a bit of fun, that's definitely doable.

In general, training for a 50k is basically the same as training for a marathon. The distances are too similar to have a major effect on training plans. The real magic ingredient is to run the 50k a tad slower than marathon pace.

You have the fitness from your recent marathon, which will still be there in 6 weeks' time. For the next couple of weeks you need to recover from Belfast, after that you can do a little bit of training to ensure you don't lose that fitness.

Because there is so little time, there is not much you can do to build yourself up, but there is a lot you can do to shoot yourself down, so definitely err on the side of caution.

    Yup, that's pretty much it.

There just have been a couple of threads about running 2 marathons close together. The exact same holds true for a marathon and 50k close together.

Thanks for the reply. Do you think i should try for a longer lsr in the build up to Portumna considering the longer distance or would maybe a 20 mile 2 or 3 weeks out be enough?

Definitely not longer - you already have your fitness built up from the marathon. A 20 miler will be plenty to ensure that you don't lose it.

Listen to your body. If your legs feel trashed, don't force them. If you want to run 20 miles and start hurting at mile 15, cut the run short.

The one thing a 50k will teach you is that there is nothing magic about 26.2 miles. Don't sweat the extra couple of miles.
