I was called for an interview this week for an Irish government department and because I'm abroad I rang them and asked them could I have the interview through Skype or on the phone.

The response I got was the above; 'It wouldn't be fair'.

What in the name of f@ck wouldn't be fair about having an interview through Skype?

Would such an endeavor put my competitors at a disadvantage?

When they say "wouldn't be fair"., what they mean is: " couldn't be arsed".

Employers often just move on to the next applicant in the stack.

    C'est la vie.

Interview panel might like to meet face to face, see your reaction to questions, etc.

This can be done online too. Plenty of Skype interviews for English Language Teachers!

Employers in this country have such a sh.itty attitude. I'm coming home after working abroad for the past six months and here I go getting ahead of myself thinking I could sort something out before I come back.

But not too worry, something else will pop up I'm sure.

Well if you are out of the country why should the employer bend over backwards to suit you??

What's bending over backwards about using Skype?

I am in regular contact with a lady who bends over backwards on Skype $2/ minute

We use both Skype and F2F for interviews here, no real difference from my perspective.

Skype has more disadvantages given you can run into the "oh I interrupted you, you go on, no you go on ... what were you saying?" scenario.
Saying that though using Skype can afford you the ability to have prep notes on the desk in front of you so you might not be "thinking on your feet".

The latter scenario above I've only noticed for Grad interviews as they tend to sit closer to the screen as if they're talking to mates so you can't see their desk, for professional agencies they were always at a desk as if you were on the other side of the desk to them.

    They're probably just being lazy.
