Insurance Continuity Question

    Hi lads,

I moved to Switzerland 6 months for a project which will go on for around another 18months, my insurance is ending on my car May 15th (the car is declared off the road) . Although my company will request me to come back to Ireland once this is over I personally dont want to, or plan to, come back. But I am wary in case I have difficulties getting a job or something else happens that I do need to return.

I paid about 390e last year for the insurance and now its about 200e more. I believe that if you are more than a year without insurance your NCB is lost?

I have 5years now and dont really want to lose it I guess.

Does anyone have first hand experience of this?

2 years away means NCB loss.

Thanks Henry, is that the industry standard?

So if my insurance expires May 13th 2015 I dont have to renew until May 12th 2017?

That would be great as I would know then if I had another permanent job here

I think so. Always check with your insurer though, and get the answer in writing.

That is the way it is at the moment and has been for a number of years. However, there is nothing to stop insurers in the morning from deciding that they will only accept NCBs that have expired for no more than a year. They could also easily decide to accept them up to 3, 4 or 5 years expired.

The No Claims Bonus system is a marketing and underwriting tool and insurers have no obligation to accept either current or lapsed bonuses if they don't want to.

Are you going to get a car in Switzerland?
If so - move your NCB from Ireland to Switzerland and move it there.
Once you decide to move back to Ireland, you will do opposite.
