Once the tester can see the wheelnuts/bolts, that's good enough. You'll be fine. Check all the lights work, including the rear number plate light and your good to go.

    Don't worry.
Rip on gear cover is not a problem for NCT.
Your hubcaps don't come off and you don't need to take them off.

Thanks guys ive had a nightmare with this car for the past year but don't have the money to buy a better car. Regarding the Carseats im told if i leave them in the NCT will test them. Should i leave them in or is it me just looking for trouble?

I think they check to see if they are mounted properly. Best to take them out if you're not sure. Make sure all of the seatbelts and receivers can be got at, not caught under seats or anything.

If he's not sure if they are mounted properly, then best thing to do is to make sure they are. Leaving them for NCT is one of the ways to do it.

check levels of oil and water and washer fluid are ok and take car for a good run before going into test as it clears the crap out of exhaust if stop starting.

Advice for the NCT? Yes, take a deep breath and relax. It's not something to get worked up about.

Ensure your tyre pressures are correct and check all your lights work correctly, including reversing lights. Perhaps get your headlamps checked and adjusted for aim (plenty of garages and tyre centres will do it for you on the spot, it only takes minutes).

Those wheel covers can stay on as they don't obscure the wheel nuts, the NCT are only concerned with seeing all the wheel nuts are present and not obviously loose.

Those car seats are not ISOFIX , so just make sure the belt goes through the red piece on the shoulder and the clasp is clicked into place and they'll be grand.

possibly needing new brake shoes and wheel cylinders,is what we might end up replacing.

Quick check on micksgarage.ie shows a set of brake shoes for 45 euro. So with fitting if you bought from a garage, I'd say under 100 euro may be a possibility.

quick question guys, what would make brakes wear down so fast? i did forget the handbrake a few times in the early days of buying the car (bought last april/may) could that have worn them down?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,585 ✭✭✭greasepalm

dont think there are disc brakes on the rear on that car, fiat always had a crappy rear brake setup,do shoes and cylinders as if you get the pistons to push in they will more than likely leak/weep brake fluid and contaminate shoes so needing new shoes again.
punto are known for wearing one brake shoe as in the leading one.
maybe brakes were worn and safe if bought second hand?
