Our decking is looking pretty tired out at the moment.
I'm thinking to paint it grey for a change.
1) Can I paint straight on to the worn down brown stain or will that have to be removed first?
2) Does anyone have recommendations on decking paint? I've found it very expensive before - one of the well known brands (can't remember which) bought at Woodies!!
3) Do I need to apply a coat of anything else? Waterproof sealer, etc..?

Thanks in advance

I just done mine a few weeks ago i powerwashed it and scrubbed it with decking cleaner brought it back to bare timber.

If youre painting yours you propably wouldnt need to be so thourgh though just get any loose bits off.

As for paints i would steer clear of ronseal i put cuprinol on this year to see if its any better they also have a good choice of colours.

Thanks Martin.

So you reckon I can just brush down the decking and get straight to painting?

No undercoat, sealer, stripping etc?

Depends on the paint youre using best off following the instructions on whatever paint you buy.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend painting a decking. Either you use a paint that soaks into the wood, in which case you would never get it back off again should you change your mind or you use a paint that sits on top of the wood, making it slippery and in no time will start flaking. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krsvPuMpVw0 http://sara555.hubpages.com/hub/Why-You-Should-Never-Paint-Your-Deck

I wouldnt recommend any paints for your deck...also stains are a waste of time
I know these products are expensive but in the long run they will save you hours of time re-coating and having to do exactly what you are doing now

By all means clean back what you have to the bare wood but use an oil

I used Osmo oils last year and its brilliant

Used a base coat teak oil and the covered with a UV protectant

Go to youtube and type Osmo deck care and you will get lots of clips

best of luck
