    Hi to all
I'm new on here and I have a C4 1.6 hdi as much as I enjoy driving the car. I have had an issue with a while with it. it is sluggish when cold and when it warms up it gets sooty black smoke from it. I have no idea what this could be but have heard a few horror stories. Can anyone shine some light on this to help.
    Thanks in advance

Does the engine light come on at all? Best thing is to drop into your local mechanic for a diagnostic. From what your saying, black smoke is usually over fueling or Boost leak.

Light only comes on for about an hour then goes off but the problem is still there when the light goes out. I'm going to get it checked out tomorrow as I mostly use it for work and bringing my kid to school.

Has it been serviced on time every time with the correct oil?
They suffer from turbo issues if not minded.

It was only serviced in February and the mechanic only used oil from main dealer. His words skimp on oil and get ready to replace the turbo

Sounds like hes on the ball.

Its possible you have glow plugs gone they wont effect the starting but could cause your issues.

I'm hoping it's nothing major like that as funds are tight at the mo with insurance. It's my biggest worry I'll get a bill for it and it would be outside my finances to clear on short notice

Quite possibly a faulty EGR valve. Common enough fault with that engine.

An EGR I don't mind I know it's a common fault with a lot of diesels so that would be a relief if it was an EGR

    Glow plugs WOULD affect starting.

I heard older diesels glow plugs caused a lot of starting issues but newer diesels I'm at a loss to many electronics for my liking

Older diesels would get very hard to start with one or two plugs gone in vold weather but modern diesels glowplugs are used for keeping emmissions down so may not even work till the engine is running.

I didn't know that about the newer diesels
