Secondary Teaching Prospects

    Hi all,

I completed my PDE last year and I am at the end of my NQT year here in London. I am on maternity leave which is ending in July and I am teaching English to all years in an 'Outstanding' school. My other subject is Geography which I am not currently teaching, just English.

Due to the cost of living here in London I am thinking of coming back home if there are any prospects of substitution hours/maternity etc back in Ireland. Also, teaching in England is a lot different with data where I feel like an accountant more than a teacher and there is a massive onus on students levels.

What are the job opportunities like back home currently? Things seem to be slowly improving although it is still difficult. I just do not want to make a wrong move in going back but although living in London does have its benefits, rent prices and the cost of living make it unsustainable even though I am getting £500 per week.

Job prospects are poor....very poor in Ireland unfortunatly. I believe this is the first year the PGDE is two years so there will be few new graduates, but that wont make much difference really.
Decent subjects to have, particularly English.
Why not apply for the jobs that come up in your subject, if you get an interview take a sick day or hop over on a cheap Ryanair flight for it. You always have the option of teaching elsewhere in the UK other than London. Worked in london myself, know how eye watering rent is
