Was just looking at flights between Dublin and Christchurch. They are about 2500 euro return at the moment for July. Id expect them to be about 1000 cheaper. Anyone know why the price is so high, and if there is a chance they will fall?

Where are you checking? I presume you looked at the airlines websites and the likes or Ebookers etc?

The flights I am looking for are going the other way. CHC-DUB-CHC. HAve looked on skyscanner, kayak, and all the usuals. Also need to depart earlier than the 7th.

Edit: Just checked qantas leaving 3rd, back 24th and they are 4000 NZ dollars. FFS.

It's May. If you're looking for July, it's pretty much short notice: ergo very expensive. Generally, the closer to departure the more expensive it will be.

Just did one from CHC-DUB-CHC from the 7th to 31st and it said $3k/€2k.

Return Christchurch to Sydney is about 300. Sydney to Dublin return 1500.

Still not great but about the best I could see. Going via Melbourne or Bangkok works out similar.

Maybe change the title of the thread seeing as it's wrong?

Cant! I thought they would be expensive both directions but it definitely seems to be the fares from NZ that are mad.

Prices are high as it's the prime time to travel to Europe - it's high summer!!

Fares the other way are lower as it's mid-winter.

I don't know about that either. I got a return fare there and back for 1200 euro last February. In their high summer. And fuel was more expensive then also. It must be some thing to do with demand in fairnesss I suppose.

Airlines increase fares when demand is likely to be higher.

    As others have pointed out:

    - you're booking at short notice so flights are likely to be more expensive as the cheap seats have already been sold
    - you're flying into peak tourist season for Europe
    - flights from Oz / NZ to Europe are always more expensive than the other way around. I've read articles about why this is, but it still doesn't seem to make sense to me.
