Oil leak?

A couple of weeks ago after driving to Dublin - Waterford- Dublin after coming back into Dublin at the first traffic light stop the car goes into limp mode and a emission control yellow light comes on.
The problem sorted itself after switching on and off. I got a mechanic to check and it showed a coil issue... but it was intermittent and didnt show again after he checked the 2nd time.

All was ok driving down the next time. But yesterday I drove down and I got a low oil reading. So I stopped and put in some oil.
On my way back up I got another low oil reading and I stopped in a lay by to check where a nearby petrol station was.
When I pulled in, the emission control light came on again. But i was still able to drive the 100 km back to Dublin.

I'm going to bring it to a garage this week but I'm just wondering what can I expect?

Some 05 (Petrol) Polos suffered from sticking valves and it would show up as a misfire (stickcoil), it would start intermittently and then get progressively worse, but don't know what connection that would have with oil loss.

What was the oil level like when you checked it?

The 1st check on the way down to Waterford it was empty. It shouldn't as I now remember topping it up two weeks before (the same day the 1st problem with the car going into limp mode happened)
On the way back I didn't check as I had used up the oil I had with me. I presume it was empty.

Do you know if you were driving the car for long when the low oil warning came on? Is there any evidence under the car or in the engine bay of an oil leak? If not it could be burning off the oil, check to see if there's blueish smoke coming from the exhaust.

Sorry for the late reply. After the 1st light I drove about 30 minutes, stopped for about 5 hours and drove about 40 minutes when the next light came on.
After speaking with people it may be that I didn't put enough oil in. It must have been about 300 ml at a guess.
