Anybody know what they charge to chip & time a race? I'm involved as a marshal at a local race today and the chip company involved seem to be charging a bit much.

I think it's €2.50 a chip tang, but don't take that as gospel. Around that though.

Just to add, i'm not trying to bad mouth or slate a chip company, i was only curious to what a standard charge is & Precision is the first company i thought of.

Online Entry in general is a minimum of 5% of the entry fee.

Chip timing is actually an area I've dipped my toes in ha, only a very part time gig at local races for me, but I'll admit straight out for smaller races with say less than 200 manual timing with 2 people taking times and 2 taking positions (experienced people ha) will be well able to get a complete and accurate set of results quite quickly, it's the way alot of smaller club Road and cross country races are still timed.

Getting to this one a little late. I'd see this as two costs. The raw cost for the individual RFID chip is very cheap. The secondary cost of the service (chip encoding, making the race number, hardware hire, event timing, results, online registration).

What price would you give it leaving out the on-line registration bit? They used Run Ireland as a registration point costing themselves more money than having it all rolled into one with the timing company maybe? The race had 310 runners in total.

Again it depends, some companies provide all the services, other will give prices for specific slices of the work, so its a tricky one to balance out. Using the online registration system is a cost but it is simpler for runners to register for your event, it also means you have a full list of runners before race day which makes the chip timers job a lot easier.

Slightly off the topic, but at the Tallaght 5k on Sunday, it was obvious that if you reg'd online, you then had on the morn to wait in a line way longer than the line for late entries. As Led Zeppelin said, makes you wonder.........
