    Hi

Im lookng to buy a passat and dont know which is the better purchase, Id be driving about 40000kms a year. Has the 1.6 enough power or do you have to drive it hard all the time hence burning more diesel?

    What are you taught s

I don't know about the Passat but I know that in the Octavia, the 140bhp is more economical in day to day driving. It has to work a lot less harder than the 1.6.

Having driven Golfs and Octavias with both engines, I'd be getting the 2.0. Its a lot more relaxed to drive, plenty power and more economical than the 1.6

I never had a Passat bt I did have a 2011 Jetta 1.6 TDI and it was just adequately powered for that car so I'd suspect a 1.6 Passat would be a bit sluggish to be honest.

Another thing I didn't like about the 1.6 was the narrow torque band, and I was constantly changing down gears around town and driving in and out of the estate where I live.

Economy was great though (55+ mpg) and the Jetta was a pretty quiet car to drive so I'd say the Passat would be quiet too but probably less economic.

I take it's a B7 Passat (2010 to 2011) you are looking at? For doing 40k km driving a year then it's a no brainer go with the 2.0 TDi. Had the 2.0 TDi in a Passat CC myself. It has ample power for overtaking and just as frugal as the 1.6 TDi as it's under less stress.

Hi ~Bazz not it would be the 2013 -2014 models Id been looking at

I assume the engines are the same? or close?

More or less. I think only the 170bhp 2.0 TDI was replaced in early 2014 with the newer 177bhp engine from the A5/A6 and they are rare enough in Ireland.

Is a CC outside your budget?

Not sure where you got that from considering mechanically they are the same car.

I had a 1.6 Passat a few years ago , although it was a fairly old model (2000 I think) , it was way underpowered and a horrible drive on the motorway, no power available to overtake and you really had to downshift and rev it. It did worst on fuel than my 2.5 V6 as well because it had to work so hard.

That would have been a 1.6 petrol, i think the op is thinking of a 1.6 diesel but would agree that either would be underpowered in a car of that size.

Personally if i was the op it would have to be a 2.0tdi either 140 or 170.
Better to be looking at it than for it regarding power

Didn't your dmf fail? Any other issues?

A fracture/leak in the gearbox caused transmission fluid to spill onto the flywheel and clutch plate which resulted in clutch slip. All replaced under warranty up North though and not a common problem on them.
