Tesla has announced they will start delivering the Powerwall during the summer.

    From the site:
Powerwall is a home battery that charges using electricity generated from solar panels, or when utility rates are low, and powers your home in the evening. It also fortifies your home against power outages by providing a backup electricity supply.
Powerwall comes in 10 kWh weekly cycle and 7 kWh daily cycle models. Both are guaranteed for ten years and are sufficient to power most homes during peak evening hours. Multiple batteries may be installed together for homes with greater energy need, up to 90 kWh total for the 10 kWh battery and 63 kWh total for the 7 kWh battery.

During power outages it could come in very useful and in the event of a long term power outage having solar panels recharging it during the day meaning you can generate light or even heat during the evening could really be a lifesaver. From what I have read, it will wholesale at about $3000 for the 7Kwh and about $3500 for the 10kWh, so additional vendor costs will probably increase that.

Here's an argument against their new system.

This guy is short their stock so bear in mind he's heavily biased, but some good points raised nonetheless

Can't justify buying one with the remaining years i have left on this earth. ESB dont pay us for power back to the grid either. Great idea but....ye olde capitalistes feckeing it up for the rest of us!
    "It'll save you a million!!"
"Yeah but it costs 1.2 million!"
    "Yeah but...the environment!!"
    "Ya. Feck off!"

You might be better buying an old crashed Prius for a couple of hundred and using the battery's out if that

Its only half the solution really. You still need to get you self an inverter to make it useful in your house.

Until they come up with some much better batteries it's not worth it. These days the cost of wear you incur on a Lithium battery costs roughly the same as burning petrol

What's wrong with a few 12v deep cycle batteries? I like the idea of having plenty of spares!
