You probably won't hear much about this, with the Super-Fight on last night and coverage of Irish boxers generally being quite poor in the media considering their success.

But Christina McMahon won the interim WBC Bantamweight title last night in Zambia. http://www.rte.ie/sport/boxing/2015/0503/698464-mcmahon-secures-interim-title-in-zambia/.

Now it must be said this is one of those cases where an interim belt was no way required as Yazmin Rivas last defended her belt less than 2 months ago. But it's a huge win for McMahon regardless, especially away in Zambia, and it's fantastic to have a female Irish boxer competing at World level.

Hope she gets some coverage and the respect she deserves for winning such a big fight.

Great achievement especially away from home.

Very well said. To beat an opponent in her back yard is always special, and I'm delighted for Christina after a recent title fight she was due to contest was called off at short notice.

From what I've read (little enough), the ref. praised both women for serving up a brilliant fight - the best female bout he'd been in charge of. He said they both went for each other from the start and tried to win by KO.

Sounds like a proper brawl, and I hope we get to see it at some point.

    Again, well done Christina!

Thanks for the heads-up. Christina came across very well - humble, grounded and articulate.

They showed a brief clip of the final round, where the action was fast and furious: slug-fest!
