The car is a 2009 tdI Passat.
Factory head unit has an "enable Bluetooth" menu setting and there are
    phone controls on the wheel.
However, bluetooth doesn't appear to be available?
Is it possible to get bluetooth working through the factory controls?
Like, by buying an add-on module or something like that?

Most likely not fitted with the bluetooth module. Might be cheaper to just replace the entire unit with an upgraded higher spec VW unit that has bluetooth fitted.

BTW there is a car audio sub forum here:

A vw Bluetooth module will probably cost about €200. I've not looked up your specific car, but they're generally up in the hundreds. Fitting them is pretty easy but involves taking out the existing radio and chasing wires.

Aftermarket ones won't work with the
Head unit or steering wheel buttons. (Unless someone can tell me otherwise)

    Thanks for the info.
From what I've read it sounds like I'd need to get a bluetooth module that goes under the driver's seat.
They seem to be available second hand for about €100.00

I'm going to look into Parrot units, which I know nothing about, but would prefer something that is properly integrated with the factory controls.

If you're buying new, ive bought a reversing camera off these lads before. No bother to deal with. http://www.carsystems.pl/

If you're buying second hand, from a breakers, make sure the car hasnt been out in the rain (assume at least 1 window has been smashed in its crash) or the BT unit will have water damage. Keep in mind you'll need VCDS to code up your BT after the install, but im sure if you're near enough a boardsie who has VCDS they'd help ya out.

FYI. I think this crashed one has BT (it looks high enough spec'd that it might). I rang them up previously looking for the head unit, but decided to get a newer version one that whats in that car.

Have a look at Fiscon bluetooth units. I had one fitted to my Golf with the RCD510 head unit. Uses the head unit screen and steering wheel controls.

Is it cheaper than a VW OEM one? Just checked Fiscon's site that's selling them and it popped up €300.

If memory serves it was significantly cheaper. My aged brain seems to recall vw wanting 800 to supply the oem unit that fits under the drivers seat.

Fiscon was easy enough to fit myself, and I am no auto electrician.

Comparing DIY to getting VW to install for you are 2 completely different things, and prices. Installing either would be a similar process im sure. Seems like either option is the guts of 2-300 euro and do the labour yourself.

The price for the oem unit was just supply. Heaven knows what they'd want to fit it. Only slight problem with the Fiscon unit was getting the car coded for it. No problem if you have access to vcds though.

For me the Fiscon was no brainer as it also added music streaming over bluetooth. Not sure if the oem unit offered that.

    They do.

Oem unit off carsystems.pl will only be 2-300, depending on the version, and your car. Buying direct of any car manufacturer is of course going to cost loads.
