hi, i would like some opinions please. I am looking to pick up a cheap diesel car for a budget of about 2.5 - 3k, for that i'm looking at 03 maybe 04 A6 OR 06/07 mondeo. Apart from the age difference, how would these compare for reliability, etc? Thanks

Where the Mondeo has the advantage is in the cheaper repair costs. I'd imagine in a year or two the audi will pretty much hold its value, but the mondeo could be sold for pocket change.

    Much prefer the A6.

Petrol or diesel models? These two cars are a different ends of the spectrum.

Diesel, its in the post there. Are they that far apart on the spectrum? I would have thought the mondeo was a bit closer to the audi than say a primera, or a laguna, what you think?

Sorry missed the original diesel bit.

No the A6 was a mid size executive saloon similar to a BMW 5 Series or Mercedes E Class whereas the Mondeo was a large size family car similar to a Passat, Avensis, etc. They were miles apart in price when they were new and did not compete with each other.

Ok, that to me would matter more if i was buying a much newer car, but its a 03/04 A6 or a 06/07 mondeo so leaving the year aside, and the class difference, and the size difference, which would be the better buy on paper?

Check out Parkers.co.uk and search for your various years of Mondeo and A6.

I was kind of hoping for personal experience from people who might have owned or worked on these particular cars.

Am important consideration given the age of the car. The A6 will probably be more comfortable. If you are a buying older cars there is a lot to be said for Ford as new parts tend to be cheaper (certainly cheaper than Audi) and second hand parts are easy to get in any breakers.

A6 is a bigger car - better for Motorway cruising etc, they Mondeo is a fine car on Motorway and back roads also.

If running/repair costs are not an issue go for the A6, I would personally go for the Mondeo because it will be cheaper to run.

Fair enough. The referenced website is a mine of information. It should be the starting point (IMO) for any second hand car search.

I don't see the Mondeo having cheaper repair costs. Not sure where that idea is coming from.

Ok the Mondeo has a timing chain rather than a belt so that is one potential cost saving.

But for regular servicing and maintenance costs, brakes, tyres etc there is little or no difference between the 2.
