    Hi all

I've just moved into a new house which has a satellite dish and TV aerial on the roof. In the sitting room there is 2 coax cables out from wall and both have a pin type connection on the end, the type you would plug into the back of a Sky box. I am trying to get the Rte channels, ant advice? Thanks

Which of these sockets types are on your faceplate

Neither, two black coax cables come out of a similar plate, but no socket

    OK, I misunderstood, an F-connector like this I assume - http://www.freetv.ie/f-connectors-1s.html

One of the cables probably carries the aerial Saorview feed, so you have to replace the F-connector with one of these - http://www.freetv.ie/coaxial-connectors-1s.html or one of these with the existing connector still in place - http://www.freetv.ie/coaxial-male-to-f-connector-adaptor-1s.html.

You should be able to get a co-ax plug locally.

Great thanks. Will a skybox be ok to get saorview through if my tv has a built saorview tuner?

There is no loop through on the newer Sky receivers so the signal will have to be split to a Saorview TV before it enters the Sky box (that is if the aerial feed is carried on a satellite cable).

But the question is are your 2 cables connected directly to the dish or is one cable connected to the satellite dish and the other connected to the aerial or are both cables connected to the dish with the aerial feed combined with one or both satellite feeds?

The first thing to do is check for a Saorview feed on both cables.

Skyboxes can't get Saorview, they're satellite receivers and Saorview is a terrestrial service. It might get Saorsat if you point the dish at the correct satellite. You may be able to get a skybox and revive the Irish channels transmitted from Astra with the right card.
I presume the dish is a sky minidish? if so you can get FTA channels and the dish is probably correctly aligned. You'll just need a skybox or other satellite box.

Is there a terrestrial antenna on the house for receiving Saorview?

Yes there is a mini dish and a large aerial on the roof. I have two f connector cables in the living room. I have managed to connect a skybox to get bbc etc, but as you say, Rte isn't poissble without Sky subscription. Could I connect one of the cables directly into my tv ( which has a built in saorview tuner) if I get some sort of adaptor for TV antenna port?

Only if one of the cables are connected to the aerial as I said above, if so, you can connect it to the TV by replacing the F-connector with a co-ax plug/adapter, as I mentioned above.

Thanks. I've just tried each of the two f connector cables into my Sky box and unfortunately both of them give me a signal from the mini dish! I wonder why there are two cables here then. No saorview for me without some effort and or cash id say. I have an indoor aerial but get nothing from it when I connect directly to the TV ( which has saorview tuner)

As I posted earlier a cable carrying a satellite feed can also carry the Saorview terrestrial signal if the 2 are combined somewhere along the cable.

The only way to know for sure is to connect each cable directly to the TV input as I described above an do a scan.

Sky/Freesat+ PVR receivers (recorders) require 2 feeds from the dish to record 1/watch 1 or record 2 programmes simultaneously. Maybe the aerial feed is sitting in the attic unconnected.

Thanks got it now, it has eventually sunk in! One problem I have now with the FTA channels through the skybox is that when I add "other channels", like CH4, the box will find them and once I store and save them, they do not save in the other channels section. When I go the the "other channels" menu. Any ideas? Thanks again

Just to add if the 2 signals are combined down a single cable a splitter/combiner like this will separate then again at the TV point

I don't use a Sky box myself but is there any other versions of Ch4 saved in "other channels", if so, delete them and try again. Someone else may be able to give better advice.

I can't see any "other channels " at all ( it asks me to insert my Sky viewing card, I ain't got one) but seem to be able to search and add them, just never able to select them. Thanks for all your help

Sky boxes without a subscription aren't the most user friendly for FTA viewing, a Freesat receiver is a better option.
