Drug growers in appartment complex

...no idea if this is the correct place for this, but I need advice.

There's been a very strong smell 24/7 these past six months or so in the hallway of our appartment complex, so strong in-fact they've been jamming the main door ajar to try rid of it. The weed smeel enters our apartment as soon as the hall door is opened for a second.

Given there are small kids around, this level of smell can't be healthy. A neighbour informed me that her friend noticed what the smell was and contacted the Guards weeks ago, I believe the response was that they'll look into it.

If this goes on much longer we don't know what to do, we don't trust the apartment management agency with the confidentiality of any report given.

    Advice please, thank you.

The more people that report it to the Gardai the quicker they will investigate. One person complaining and "they will look in to it" in time. 5 people complaining and they will take it seriously.

You would be surprised; the Gardaí could have the place under surveillance to see how deep the wormhole goes and who can potentially be implicated.

    Isn't it a a rabbithole?

If you need them to act on an ongoing concern, contact the Gardai yourself, take a note of the name of the detective(s) you speak to, document all correspondence you have with them and persist if they don't act on it. Although the likelihood is that they are already investigating, considering how blatant the smell is to neighbours.

I wouldn't be surprised if the guards aren't interested. We had a similar issue. Your best bet might be to get on to the Management Company. If they are renting the Landlord will probably find a huge mess on their hands come eviction time.

Are the apartments individually metered inside the unit or are they a bank of meters in the communal area? Keep an eye or get the OMC to keep any eye out for unusually high (excuse the pun) electricity use, usually a dead give away.

The main door of the building, not the apartment door.

Bern honest it's sounds like someone is smoking weed rather than growing it .
One of our neighbours is a regular smoker and you can smell it all over the corridors and at our front door.

I'm not aware that growing plants give off a smell.

Its more likely that they are some potheads in the apartment and you just smell their smoke. I don't think the gardai would be interested in investigating people smoking weed in their own home. Your best bet would be to mention this to the landlord. If they are potheads, as distinct from people who enjoy an occasional puff, then the apartment might not be looked after properly (smell into furniture etc).

They stink. It does sound more like smokers rather than growers. The smell from smoke tends to travel further than the smell from plants. Unless it's a large grow I can't imagine it stinking out the whole building and if somebody had such a large grow in an apartment I would have thought they'd have bought carbon filters to avoid detection.

The advent of led grow lights should have largely done away with the unusually high electricity use.

I'm surprised you aren't getting a strong smell of Nag Champa to mask it. As soon as someone comments that they love Nag Champs alarm bells go off in my head. Keep contacting the Guards, put pressure on. I'm not even anti weed (don't smoke it though) but that strong smell around kids, I would be harassing the guards. It lingers and i've smelled it off kids before whose parents must smoke or they live in a building such as yours. It's not nice.

If you are interested in getting them to stop and not just getting them lifted by the Gards why not leave an anonymous note under the door saying that some neighbours have called the Gardai because of the smell and now would be a good time to knock it on the head.
If they really are growing it in there that will be enough to make them stop (and probably move) or if they are just smoking it will probably be enough to make them take more precautions to stop the smell effecting everyone else.

All I need now is the extractor fans fitted and I've something that's less trouble than a tenant and frankly a lot more fun!

If you are concerned there will be no follow up you have a few options.

    1) Ask to be put through to the local drugs unit or leave your number for them to call you. Where they are stationed will depend on what area you are in. Country stations tend to have one or two units per county. Dublin stations are likely to have one in every two or three stations.

    2) Write to the local Superintendent about your concerns. Supers love a good drug bust to make them look good.

    3) Pass your information on to the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666111 or Crime Stoppers 1800 250025

The smell off plants unhealthy  Don't ever bring you're kids to the park as there's loads of plants that smell there. There's far worst blowing around your apartment than the smell off weed.

I'm actually in favour of weed smoking, but I just draw the line at any drugs at all around kids. They likely don't have the frame of reference to make a decision about their standpoint on drugs. They shouldn't have to be exposed to something they won't and shouldn't have to understand our have an opinion on for years.

Treat it as you would any smell coming out of an apartment into the hallway, knock on the door and complain or like another poster said, leave a note.

If they've any sense of self preservation it'll stop immediately. No fuss, no drama with kids or 5am raids or any of that lark.

...id have no problem with the odd hint of a smell, but it being 24/7 and consistently overpowering theres just no comparison in saying that its the same natural thing....I saw the younglad across the way there last night dealing rosebuds and daisy petals to his scum mates all hanging around acting the mick...just no place for kids to be playing /sarcasm

Place stinks to high hell of ****e today, must be re-potting time (pardon the pun).

Don't feel the need to justify yourself. Someone will always try and bring their "free the weed" agenda into any thread involving cannabis. It's all well and good to say that plants smell just as strongly in the park but this is not the park, it's your home. The smell of the stuff can be very overpowering, especially to kids, and if their activities are also attracting a bad crowd then this is even more of a reason to act on it.

Knock on there door and pretend you smoke the odd one.Inform them off the strange smell and advice then with caution that the neighbors have started talking and the guards have been called paranoia should kick in :):) . If they look dodgy and not your normal looking stoner just say sorry got the wrong apartment.

How about a note under the door mentioning that the neighbours can smell the illegal activity and it may well only be a matter of time before they;re busted.

Chances are they dont want to advertise their illegal activity any more than you have to smell it.
