Sky and Viacom Deal

The only way I can see Channel 5 and it's sister channels been added to the irish epg is if Viacom want to enter the advetisment market here with Channel 5, 5* 5USA and Spike. I suppose this new deal with Sky could bring it a step closer to happening.

They are already in the advertising market here with MTV and Comedy Central, as well as Nickelodeon. I'm not sure to what extent the Channel 5 and MTV Networks people talk to each other though as they are two very different businesses, a UK-only FTA business and a UK/Irish pay-TV business. AFAIK the Nickelodeon channels and Comedy Central are still part owned by Sky.

I wonder if Sky have any interest in trying to get Channel 5 on to the irish epg and if they had discussions with Viacom about adding them?

I wouldn't be getting my hopes up.

Isn't TV3 going to be airing Big Brother this time round?

If so, it'd be one programme that'd have to be blocked here. As well as Home and Away and Neighbours, or RTE wouldn't be happy.

Don't think much else on their schedule would be a conflict though.

Long forgotten now, but Channel 5 started the whole blocking thing in the first place when they blocked RTE from showing Home and Away on NTL in NI. First time an individual programme had ever been blocked on any platform in the UK or Ireland.

I think it interesting that David Lynn, president of Viacom’s operations in the UK, Australia and eastern Europe said “We’re convinced Viacom’s interests are best served by a single point of advertising sales in the UK and Ireland

And "Sky’s deal with Viacom also includes a five-year extension to its carriage agreement for all of its channels."

Channel 5 is the main investor for Big Brother, Neighbours and Home and Away hence their decision not to allow RTÉ show Neighbours etc on NI platforms.

TV3 and RTÉ could not prevent Channel 5 appearing on UPC or on Sky's EPG under EU law once a Channel is licence in an EU country it may broadcast into other countries. The issue with imports is rights. However Channel 5 most likely have rights for Ireland, as part of their rights agreements, considering they would spend far more on Rights than an Irish Broadcaster.

Neither Channel 5 or BT could prevent Soarview Spillover into NI or the West coast of Wales.

It will be interesting to see if they will launch on any platforms but Channel 5 is a largely unknown channel this side of the Irish sea. I wonder what its audience is like in NI.

Sky will know the audience share for Channel 5 in RoI so they might push for Otp-Outs, largely speaking most opt outs are sold by Sky and the addition of Pick and Challenge last year might point to Sky wanting to increase its market here.

C5 are taking the Football League highlights on from next season - these have always been ITV or BBC before. Not a massive draw for Ireland but there are still sizeable amounts of Leeds (and potentially Sunderland next season) fans around.

I'm surprised its never turned up on UPC before but there now may be a bit more impetus to get it.

Those fans of the highlights would lose out watching it in HD for next year because the BBC has them in HD on Sky+ HD & Freesat and C5 is SD only in the ROI.

Can you tune in C5HD when subscribed to SkyHD?

You only tune in C5HD when subscribed to Sky UK while living in NI. The UK EPG Number for Sky is 171.

I though that RoI viewers had access to ITV Encore via other channels?

I've see Channel 5 HD through other channels on a box using an Irish subscription.

Channel 5 HD is on DVB-S2 only on Sky. Unless you have it with a FTV (Freesat from Sky) card inserted into it.

It was most certainly seen with an Irish viewing card in the box. DVB-S2 is irrelevant these days since Sky released an update that enables you to search for DVB-S2 channels and add them to Other Channels.

Channel 5 HD along with other HD channels not on the Irish EPG such as ITV Encore HD, ITV 2 HD etc can be added to Other Channels and viewed with an active Irish HD subscription.
