Online cv portfolio

Just looking for people's opinions of creating an online cv/portfolio?
Basically a personalised webpage with examples of previous projects & work, including images etc..

Basically I've gone travelling for a while and I've found myself unemployed for the first time in my life. I have quite a bit of experience and I don't want to veer off my career goals, but I'm finding it difficult to get work and recruiters are promising everything & delivering nothing. I've considered creating an online portfolio to find small contract work, but I don't really like the idea of exposing my career history and personality so openly online.

Has anyone here done it before and had any success/failure?

Is this a pointless exercise and should I just stick with LinkedIn?

I think I'd stick with LinkedIn - unless you're a graphic/web designer or similar where it's really important that the portfolio itself (not just the contents) is something you've designed, then it's probably not worth the effort. It's just another thing you need to keep updated.

LinkedIn allows you to upload images, documents, add projects to your profile etc - plus it's searchable by recruiters.

How were you planning to get this in front of people?

Please have a look at my own portfolio. Maybe that will give you an idea how to create one for yourself.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

I guess I had considered putting myself out there for potential contract jobs/nixers. I'm in engineering, so it's probably only worth doing if I fully commit to the idea and look to start my own consultancy.

I think my time might be better spent learning new skills.
