Hi all, first time posting here.

I am currently living in the UK and moving back home in the next few weeks. I am thinking of purchasing a car over here and clearing it back at home.

My question is, is it true that i can clear the car for free back home??

    Thanks for your help

Almost, you have to have owned the car for at least 6 months first.

What evidence is required in respect of the Vehicle?

You are required to prove that you had possession of and actually used the vehicle abroad for at least 6 months before transfer and that the appropriate local taxes have been paid and not refunded. This proof will usually consist of:
    the vehicle registration document
    the certificate of insurance
the sales invoice, receipt of purchase or other similar document
evidence of the date on which the vehicle was brought into the State (e.g. sailing ticket)

You will also be required to produce evidence of use of the vehicle abroad. This evidence will consist of, for example:
    service and maintenance records
    fuel receipts
documentation that indicates that annual circulation and registration taxes have been paid etc.
such evidence as may be requested in individual cases.

You will need to prove that you have owned and used the car in the UK for at least 6 months and also prove that you have lived there for at least that period too. In other words you don't qualify if you buy a car now, store it over there at a friend or relatives place for 6 months, move back home now and then in 6 months time bring the car home.

If you do qualify for VRT exemption then you will not be able to sell the car over here for at least 12 months without being liable for VRT.
