Will fibre broadband be of any benefit to me?

    Hi,

I'm located in a small village that is due to get fibre in July, was April-June but I see the Eircom fibre map has been updated again with a new psychedelic colour scheme and its now been pushed out a bit to July but still delighted its on the cards at all.

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone who lives in a similar small village that has already been upgraded to fibre can give me an idea of whether fibre will be of any benefit to me even when it does arrive.

I live 2.2KM from the exchange, I currently get 10.5Mb dl speeds and .5Mb upload on adsl2+

Just wondering what the situation with fibre will be for me, does fibre drop off a cliff at the 2KM mark making it totally redundant for me?

If it does and fibre is not an option for me, can I still retain the current connection and speeds over ADSL2+ ? or which would be the better to go with?

Thanks in advance to anyone who has been in similar situation and can give me an idea of how it worked out for them r/t.

I think the limit is 2km for fibre from the cabinet

Thanks folks, so is the general way of upgrading smaller villages to Fibre by Eircom just upgrade the exchange and leave it at that so the catchment are is a max of 2KM or do they install any cabs outside of the exchange to service a wider circle beyond the 2KM at all?

it's not really cost effective for them to install more cabinets to service a minority of people,

No I don't believe so (1500m as stated above so its even less)

So my line will operate the same after the exchange is upgraded to fibre, ie, I can still get the 10.5Mb download and .5Mb upload speeds I currently get?

it's quite likely your speeds will decrease when fibre is available, unfortunately.

Not true, according to Eircoms docs EVDSL should have no effect on existing ADSL2+ lines.

the reality is rather different, though.

And have you any evidence of this?

why would a company say any different than there will be no change?

that way they can't get away with charging the same price for NGB as Fibre

I'm at a loss as to what your point is. Can you elaborate on the statements you've made. In some context some are correct, well sort of correct. Then your last post throws it all over the place. Look if your going to make a comment, try not to make it cryptic.

Pretty much everything RFOLEY has posted is wrong.

    1700m from the exchange.
2000m(2200m in empty areas) from a cab.

VDSL may effect ADSL lines, but only extended reach lines way out at 6km plus with a 1-2Mb sync. Nobody else will really notice. Remember COMREG rubber stamps the CLFMP not eircom.

OP, you need to find out if there are any cabs planned, or just the exchange. Check the wholesale map.

The wholesale map shows a cab 600m from the exchange but going by its location it would be further from me than a direct exchange connection. Very oddly placed too as it appears to be in the most sparsely populated area of the village.

Guess it's a matter of waiting and seeing what happens when it goes live.

I think to clarify for the OP - Ed, do you know if Eircom will remove the ADSL gear when they install the VDSL gear or will they leave it there for those people that will be beyond the reach of eVDSL?

If they remove the ADSL gear the OP will be badly affected as he is 2.2KM from the Exchange and would unlikely get near 10.5Mbps from eVDSL (if he gets anything at all).

They might remove some cards as the DSLAM empties out, but they aren't nuking the product. You're welcome to stay on adsl even if vdsl would be better and is available.

Thanks for the replies folks. Thinking about it logically, I suppose it wouldn't make good economic sense for Eircom to lose all existing customers beyond 2Km radius of the exchange just to provide faster connections to other existing customers within the 2KM radius.

Basically it wouldn't make sense to invest in state of the art upgraded equipment to lower your customer base. So at a minimum I would expect my current service to continue which is fine as I know lots of people in similar small rural villages would be over the moon to even have that option. Anything over and above that may develop when the exchange goes live will be a bonus. Although increased upload speed even would be fantastic..
