Cork or Limerick

I'm returning to Ireland at the end of May and planning a move to Cork or Limerick.

The cheapest 2 bedroom apartment I can find in Dublin is 1200 a month which is the reason I won't be moving there.

I can get a 2 bed in Limerick for 600 and in Cork for about 800.

I've never lived in Cork, I only was there once or twice. However I lived in Limerick for three years back during the 'Tiger'.

However I'm not sure what the job situation is like there now. I'm assuming it's much better in Cork because of the larger population size making that the best place to move?

Where else could there be? Galway or Belfast?

Cork, bigger city more job opportunitys, and imo nicer than limerick, but this is ah so Ill get blasted for suggesting a city that doesnt have a minimum of 1 hour commute and inflated property/rent prices like our glorious captial dublin does.

Dublin takes the p.iss. I can't imagine sharing a room with 2-3 people just to make ends meet.

    Limerick, definitely.

You've lived there, know what it's like.

    It's cheaper.

    It's heaven.

As a born and bred Limerick man now working in Cork,
I have to say, I actually do prefer Cork,
It has much more of a large town feel,
there are very few troublemakers in the city,
I feel safe walking home at 1am.

The English Market has !!amazing!! food for very good prices, much better than supermarkets,
there is plenty of amazing restaurants to eat out in,
    a great nightlife,
and beaches within 40 minutes of the city.

My only quibbles are that all the major shopping centers are far from the City Center,
and the rent is 20 -35% more expensive than Limerick (but its worth it).

OP, this is hippy shorthand for you requiring immense mental fortitude to deal with living in either location.

Can you sleep on someones couch for a month until you get one? I think Cork is a bit of a better city. Limerick can be a bit spread out.

I know for the tech and pharma industry there is, (I know that doesnt help you anto9).
I have no exposure to other industries sadly.

I know a few people who've moved down there recently getting catering and retail type jobs. Seems grand as long as you've experience, but your age might work against you :(

In my day you moved to wherever the work is, not the other way around.

Well if we knew what kind of a job you were interested in, it might make advising you a bit easier?

    No Galway option though OP?

Galway is a great city too and there are great opportunities for employment in a number of sectors, but unless we knew what sector you were interested in, very hard to say either way.

Go where the work is, if not family.

Cork, there's major developments going starting soon and the City is starting to buzz again. Have to go to Dublin for a job offer though, I'll miss it!

    Even Syria?

OP,I dont know what line of work you are in but a fast look on Irishjobs tells you that Cork has over double the jobs advertised than Limerick. No great surprise.Cork has the most Pharma plants in Ireland and tech is fairly big too with Apple and EMC having nearly 10,000 employees between them.
There seems to be a good few general operative jobs there if you are not qualified in anything.

Then on your time off,you can pay West Cork a visit which is probably the nicest part of Ireland.

Nothing against Limerick but its no contest really.

I'm a Dub and I would definitely rate Cork as a better option. Its city centre is just a lot busier and more interesting and you've a lot more going on in general.

It's a very livable city and its very definitely buzzing again.

It's also pretty safe as the city centre is all very well used, unlike either Dublin or Limerick both of which have very dodgy central areas.

    Sorry Limerick, it's nothing personal.

Unless you are stone-mad about sport, don't move to Limerick. There really isn't much else going on in the city.

I don't know about Cork but seriously give Galway a chance. It's a great city (Big town really) to live in as everything is so centralised. Bear in mind though that rent will be higher than Limerick, similar to Cork and that traffic can be woeful. Even compared to Dublin :(

If you are in an IT or Pharma related industry, there are a lot of opportunities in Galway.

How about somewhere else on the east coast or inland? Or does it necessarily have to be a city?

Well if you make up your mind and go to Syria don't take the road to Damascus. People are inclined to change their mind when travelling that road

Have lived in both and settled near limerick So I'd chose there. People are nicer IMO and I prefer it being a bit smaller. Getting places is easier and you're half way between cork and galway if you fancy a spin.

Plenty work in limerick and Shannon at the moment depending on your line of business

When i lived in Waterford 2005 to 2007 ,it was even then hard to get any job and those were the boom years .At the time i was self employed and it did not matter .Yes ,rents are cheap though .

I think the city is the safest option in terms of jobs. Where had you in mind, Bray or something?

Lived in Dublin and hope to move back in future, but being from Cork and having been to Limerick few times I think Limerick is underrated.

If you can find the better areas then Cork has more choice, but Limerick is a nice City too.
