my USB had failed last night to recognise it as a hard drive. It was available as a USB device but it was in allocated. I initialized it but did not format it. I can't see it now either but online pay software does recognise most of the files.
Is there anything I can do to recover this had as it appears to work but must have lost clusters

I generally use Recuva to retrieve lost files...

You could also try something like Easus partition recovery to find lost partitions and recover data from them...
