I got a written prescription from a private doctor for lets say man troubles I have a question about the hand written prescription...... do pharmists hold on to the prescrption note when it is used up or do I still have refills its honestly a case of not being able to read the handwritting and its only something I take on the occasions I need it

You get to keep the prescription usually, but pharmacist stamps it so if it was prescribed only to be dispensed once, then you won't be able to refill. If that's not specified I'm not exactly sure

As long as the prescription doesn't say 1 dispensing only, it should be valid for 6 dispensings or 6 months, whichever is used up first.

Make sure and check the generic price if available.

Neither of the previous posters is quite right:

IF it's a repeatable prescription, you can have it back if you want but most (all?) pharmacies will hold on to it for you if you want. It is YOUR choice.
BUT, if it's NOT a repeatable prescription, or if it was repeateble but the repeats have been used up, then the pharmacy MUST hold on to it.

Some medicines are automatically repeatable, unless the doctor specifies not to repeat.

What Feb.rising says is only true for meds in the first of these categories.
