New Z50 blocking me from the web

New Lenovo Z50. Started it last night.

    1. Logged onto my Eircom connection and downloaded Firefox and AVG.
    2. Uninstalled McAfee.
    3. Downloaded some add-ons like Adblock, smoothwheel, webmail adblocker.
    4. Started to set up my book marks, Boards, Twitter,Hotmail, Donedeal etc and none of them would connect to the relevant site.
    5. Started IE and the same happens.
    6. Checked all my settings and they seem normal.

I can get onto Google, search and display results but none of the selections will load. I just get the "Unable to connect" display. The only site I can access is Outlook and my Hotmail account.

I have disabled all the add ons, but still no go. My old laptop can still access the sites as normal with no issues using Firefox. I have all the latest versions loaded.

Can any of you fella's suggest a way forward?

    Thanks.

    TT

Are you trying to open all these from Firefox? Have you tried typing in the URLs directly? What operating system are you using? What do you mean by 'logged on to my eircom connection'?

    Windows 8.1.

I have tried Firefox and IE - same result. Yep, same thing happens when I try typing in the URL's directly. I have used alternate search engines... same result.

I mean connected to my Eircom BB account via a wireless modem 5 feet away.

    Thanks.

How did you download Firefox and AVG at the start? Was it all working initially?

Sounds like the dns is not working or being blocked.

    1 Try restarting your router.
2 Check your network adapter in the control panel, have a look at the ipv4 settings and see if they are manually set.
3 Try turning off avg, maybe it has a firewall blocking your dns ? Avg is nearly a virus in its own right at this stage, it keeps setting my search pages for me.

    Disabled AVG - Nothing.

    OK. re started router... Nada.

Checked the network adapter, ran its trouble shooter option and it said it had fixed a problem. Able to access some sites like Lloyds, Three and Currency Fair but not RTE, BBC, Sky, Met Eirean or Boards.

Can you explain how to check the IPV4 settings please - beyond my knowledge I'm afraid.

Chiz. Yep. Connected initially to AVG and Firefox but it seemed to start itsissues when I used Google to locate my sites for book marking.

Thanks to you both. Appears sorted. I have uninstalled AVG and have no problems now.

One last piece of advice. Is it worth trying AVG again or shall I go down the Avast or Avira route?

    Thanks again.

    ...........

The "built-in" uninstaller doesn't always work properly :(

AVG have a tool to remove any bits that remain :
you need to use this as it can cause problems weeks/months later

As a matter of interest are you aware of a similar software specific tool for McAfee?

you need to download it fresh from here each time :

    http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

    https://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS101331
Do Not download and save MCPR for future use. MCPR is updated periodically as new products are released, and running an older version might cause problems with new products. Always return to this article and download MCPR again when you need to run it.

the odd time it won't work properly - it's then quicker/better to just backup and reinstall windows
