Car insurance mess up

Hi I was insured with AXA on a Citroen Xsara up until march, My policy was paid by DD monthly and I never missed a beat. I changed my car to a Volkswagen Passat in mid march and swapped my insurance over. I recieved my disc and cert in the post. The disc I recieved was only valid for one week as I still had to pay the money for switching the car over due to a problem with their payment system not taking my payment.

I paid the outstanding balance within the week and waited for my disc. I was waiting a week or two when I recieved a letter from AXA stating that I had an outstanding balance with them and this was my final warning. It was a registered letter and dated nearly two full weeks before I recieved it, so went down to my branch and asked could they give me the disc and to ask them about the letter when the woman behind the counter told me that my policy had been cancelled!

She said the reason for the cancellation was that my last DD payment had not gone through. I was sure I had paid all my months up and had recieved no contact from AXA to tell me that I owed them money even through the whole process of changing my car over and being down in the branch it wasn't mentioned once. The first time I heard of it was when I recieved the registered letter (very late! Not my fault nor theirs) I wasn't dodging it I had the money it was no problem for me to pay.

I think I've been a bit hard done by here as now it's going to be nearly impossible for me to get insurance on a monthly plan, I realise it wasn't AXAs fault I recieved the letter too late but it surely wasn't mine either, When I mentioned this to the lady in the branch she said to take it up with An post, But sher what can they do only apologise? Is their anything I can do?

Their is also the small matter of me driving around uninsured for a whole month thanks to them not informing that it had been cancelled, According to the woman in the shop I hadn't been insured since the 3rd march! I paid €85 to swap my car over arund the 27th/28th march but considering I had no policy to swap my car over to am I entitled to that €85 back?

Sorry for long post and I realise a lot of people won't bother reading but I just wanted to get everything in there.

    Thanks

had you paid using a card I would contact the issuer and reverse the payment (chargeback)

I paid using a card yes, Would I be able to just contact the bank and get that done?

Sometimes you may want to dispute a card transaction if:

The transaction was not authorised by you, or put through more than once
The supplier did not deliver the goods or services you paid for
The goods were delivered to you but were faulty or not as described

looks to me like a perfect example

How could you switch a car on a policy at the end of March if it was cancelled on March third? I'd be asking them that

I'd take it above the lady at the counter to be honest, sounds like she hasn't a notion and is just trying to fob you off.

Speak to someone more knowledgeable and they may reinstate once you explain the situation.

That's exactly what I said to her when I went in, How could he not have noticed it when I was switching the policy over. Her reply was that it was on a different part of their system and he wouldn't have seen it, Seriously?

I've sent their customer care department an email, So I'll have to see what they say.

You are probably entitled to the 85 back but if it was me i would be looking at playing nice and getting the policy reinstated. My reasoning behind that is technically you have had a policy cancelled and it would make it difficult and expensive to get quotes in the future.
If you dont disclose this to an insurance company , the insurance you will be buying would be worthless
