I need a plumber/builder to make good our shower room. basically
To remove old shower tray & remove shower door & screen.
To remove last row of wall tiles.
To fit new 1200mm X 800mm low rise shower tray.
To fit new 1200mm wet room panel.

To repair last row of wall tiles / repair drilled tiles.
To supply necessary sealant / adhesive / grout.

I have a quote for just shy of €700 for this work -
and it was said it could be knocked out in a day. (practically 85perhour if taking 8 hours)
Is this obscene pricing??? or just the going rate because plumbers are so in demand with Irish water that they sling a quote at you and if you with no breakdown or explanation of the cost and figure you'll agree to pay 'cash'

Price isn't bad. Shower tray and door removed and new tray will need to be set in and levelled in sand and cement. Allowed to dry for a day then tiled and left for a few hours then wet room panel goes up. So he'll have to make 3 trips. Make sure he uses aquastrap or classiseal

Like above aquastrap or classiseal is a must. This is the best way by far the best way to seal the shower tray.

Assuming price is inc vat I don't see how it is expensive. More important than the price is to make sure it is done properly.

yes thanks for reply.. is the price the going rate then? Maybe I am just skeptical... even so taking 21% VAT out it still works out about 550 which still equates to just shy of 70euro per hour for essentially 8 hours work - not sure what line of business you're in but that's a pretty good wedge. This quote is purely labour only - I have bought the new tray and screen and classiseal.

Let's just put this in perspective. 15mins to take off the screen.. 1 hour 45mins to take out the old shower tray and very bottom row of tiles and prep. (2hrs gone) Knock up cement (or ready made) ensure waste is good and drop tray and add classiseal around edge. another 2hrs? leave to set? That's 4 hours work -then leave to set overnight?
back following morning and plumb one new shower screen to side - add new tiles to bottom of shower tray and make good with sealant? another 4hours?
mmm I'm in the wrong game then

Waste will need to be moved, plaster board may need replacing if shower had been leaking before or if tiles don't come off it easily. Also factor in going to your house 3 times in the free van with the free diesel and the free tools

I'm not trying to be smart but you make it sound so easy why don't you do it yourself?

If he is good at what he does & does it right then the quote is ok. If he is a 'handyman', Jack of all trades, ok at most things but not great at any then it's very expensive.

It's much more important to have someone properly trained & get the job done right than getting a cheap quote & have it leak in a few years.

For the money quoted I would expect a tradesman that is very good at what they do, has proof of insurance & provides you with a vat receipt.

Plus if he is self employed only approx 1/3 of that is profit after overheads

Did he come recommended...You should get a second price i think. My opinion is its very very expensive.fit new shower tray and last row of tiles etc is a day max.fit 1200 glass door the following day,2 hour max
leveling the shower tray with fast setting flexible tile adhesive speeds up the job.
Sealux seal and sealux silicone is also a foolproof method to seal the tray, sometimes better than the classic seal
