    Just stumbled across this.
    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/e200-mercedes-k-sport-with-12mth-warranty/9267692?offset=7
Nice car but stupidly caught out by the tax system here. On the CC based system this is 636 to tax, numerous early 08 versions of these cars are on the CC system as it was optional for 6 months in 08.
1200 tax on the entry level engine is sickening. I remember mercedes ran into trouble with a good few of these that they had in stock in 08 as with the high emissions, the vrt / price of these was off the chart versus competition and I think mercedes took a 20k hit on them to get them to a reasonable cost against the diesels.
You would want to be getting that awful cheap now to justify it

    Mercedes regged 794 E Class 1.8s in 08 including 11 imports.
5 of these were after July and all were D reg.

Surprisingly, they shifted 110 in 2009.

Id say they regd everything they had before July 08 sold or not.

They must have sold them very very cheap

They did, I remember. A lot of hire cars too.

That was a very traumatic time. We had 4 month old hire cars coming back costing more than you could buy brand new ones for. (Different brand) manufacturers giving free road tax and all sorts to shift them.

The tax on this is not €1200 but €636. you need to go over 2.5 to pay €1200. i do agree however, that even €636 is silly money

If you type the reg in here it says €1200

If you are thinking its CC based then ya it would have been €636, but I'm assuming it's on the new CO2 based system and it must be putting out a lot of CO2 to be rated that high, as tax goes. But I only skimmed over all this so I could be wrong.

My bad, just noticed that it was a 2009 car, it must be burning old wellies to make the tax that high

Maybe you should read things you see on the internet alittle more closely.

If ye think the merc is bad for motor tax
    2007 1.3 mazda RX8 tax is 385.
    2009 1.3 mazda RX8 tax is 2350.

To be fair, they weren't taxed as 1.3 to begin with.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,601 ✭✭✭cerastes

But some got them taxed as 1.3s? That wasn't advertised widely I'd guess

There were more winners than losers in the change to emissions tax.

Slight grey area . Some were

Most were taxed as 1.7 at 636euro

AFAIK, you could go to the dealer, get a form signed to verify the engine CC @ 1.3 and get the tax reduced.

I think the jap import RX8's were taxed at 1.3 because that's what was on the registration documents coming from Japan. The Irish models were classed as 1.7 as a kind of gentlemans agreement type of thing.

Yep I clearly remember mazda registering them all in early 08 to avoid that tax.

That Merc would make a nice PSV. You couldn't say the same for the Mazda I suppose!

This one is in the US and it's listed as 1.3 litre - http://www.edmunds.com/mazda/rx-8/2009/?sub=coupe

I meant in ireland on our tax system

There's one 09 rx8, red. It was an import.
There were no 2008 rx8s registered after July

28 for pre July, with no upwards spike in May/June so they had it in hand.

They did have some mazda3 mps's for very cheap in 08
€22k new IIRC. They had 3 of them for sale, one was in Limerick. They had one of those big electronic signs like you'd have for road works advertising it.

It just goes to prove how utterly ridiculous and ill thought out the emission based tax system is. There was no forethought put into it, it almost single handedly killed the second hand car market for many years (it still hasn't recovered) and the government lost hundred of millions in VRT and tax. I still can't figure out why they haven't returned to a single tier CC based system and include all cars no matter what the are. It would actually make money for the government!

Most countries have emissions based tax where lower emissions pay less tax. It's not a uniquely Irish idea.
Not sure what you mean by killing the used car market though. People are still importing cars from the UK despite an unfavourable exchange rate - because there is still small money to be saved by doing so. Hardly a sign of a market that has been killed? If the market was truly fecked, we'd be exporting our used cars to the UK - not the other way around.

It has actually helped make the government billions in VRT as it has changed peoples mindset who would now rather spend tens of thousands to save a couple of hundred in motor tax a year. Plenty of posts on here of people doing tiny mileage yet looking for diesel cars with €200 motor tax new or nearly new cars purely to save money on motor tax yet they will be losing thousands more in depreciation than if they stayed with whst they had.

There are some interesting opportunities presenting themselves now given the price of cars on the emissions system are coming down as they are now up to 7 years old.........

For example, a 2008 3 litre 525i with an cash price of € 10,950 presumably as the screen price is € 11,950 (we shall ignore the dealer etc :) )

It's an SE & manual admittedly, but still, a nice car compared to most.

To tax this costs €740, €416, €211 (Annual, 6 month rate, 3 month rate)

Now here we see a 2006 530i SE that's auto with lots less miles but asking the same (ish) and again from a dealer.
    http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/bmw-5-series-530i-se-272bhp/9193172?offset=5
    40539648.jpeg

To tax this costs €1494, €829, €422 (Annual, 6 month rate, 3 month rate)

Similar (As a BMW fan I realise they are not at all the same) cars, one with more miles but 2 years younger and approx €1000 less per year to tax that are seemingly much the same to buy cost wise.

Over 5 years you are looking at €5000 in motor tax difference

Surely these high tax cars would be better off exported to the UK, with the strong Sterling you'd probably get takers there for them and maybe even get a small bit back from the VRT also.

I'm nearly certain I remember a grey Rx8 2009 some fancy edition for sale in Ireland. It had the top rate tax €2250 or whatever and was asking @ 3-4 years old something around €5k...?

Yes, that rings a bell. 40th anniversary edition.
