What is the problem with the steering?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 291 ✭✭The Darkroom

The P/S light came on. I had just 3 days earlier had it NCT. Drove it home no problem there yesterday from a. Trip into town. Put some oil in the engine. Got into the car, turned on ignition and the only light that. Came on was power steering and it won't work. Just wondering if anyone knows what it might be?

Check the fuse for the PS is first thing to try. After that you would want a pro to look at it as it could get expensive to replace it.

What year is car? Why did you put oil in it? Do you mean engine oil? Was that light on too?

Just the regular engine oil I always put into it as I noticed it was low on oil ( no light came on for oil just my usual fill ). The fuse sounds like something it could be alright. Has anyone an estimate on how costly a new fuse might set me back? I'm driving a Toyota Yaris 2008.

I thought it might be something to do with a run down battery?

A new fuse is less than a euro.

So you mean the only light that came on was the p/s light, and the car won't start? Or the power steering won't work? Just to clarify.

Clerks how do I change a fuse? What am I looking for? Yes the car will start alright but this morning it was very weak in starting so I'm suspecting a run down battery.

Do not attempt to do this yourself.

Will it cost much to have a mechanic do it? If so have you any idea of an estimate ? Would be great to get an idea so I can have the money at hand before heading up to him.

OMG just go to a mechanic, you wont even have to pay him to diagnose it. you are talking pennies if not free if its a fuse

If it's weak starting, you most likely need a battery anyway. I would start there. A battery is about 50 euro or so. Fire it in, and if it's still the same, take it to a garage to be plugged in and read.

Thats all good an well if the OP knew what an effing fuse looked like. The comment about replacing the battery just defies all sorts of logic. Its basically, keep changing parts until you see what fixes it. moronic

Your post is moronic. You are posting in the Do It Yourself car maintenance and repair forum, telling someone not to do it himself. Can you not see how moronic that is?

If the battery is weak, what would you suggest, change it, or take the car to a garage?

LOL. DIY is not a job for someone who doesnt know what a fuse is. There is a basic level of mechanical knowledge required for all DIY jobs - knowledge that is blatantly missing from the OP. exhibited by the lack of knowledge of common parts, and the lack of ability of searching for these parts on any search engine or book.
If the battery is weak, it can be caused by many things, lots of which would not require the needless expenditure of money in a shot in the dark effort at fixing a problem. A weak battery could be a weak battery which only needs recharging- due to the radio, or lights being left on (im sure you would buy a new battery here too?), could be a faulty alternator, dodgy starter, poor wiring, or, as you root caused without any knowledge  a battery that needs replacing. All of these can be diagnosed by any mechanic in less than 10 mins, or even at a motor factors. However, the idiotic notion that it is the battery will require 50-70 euro expense, 20-30 mins labour, and potentially the same problem. and finally, the battery may not be the reason why the power steering isnt working.

Finally FWIW it probably is the battery, but the root cause needs to be addressed and not the symptoms.

Stop bickering Pablo and Squat before I ban you from thread. Instead use an image or youtube or similar to show OP how easy it is to do this job DIY.

    Thanks

Indeed. It's never too late to learn more about your car and checking if a fuse has blown is about as gentle an introduction as possible.

Op, look it up in your manual or online where to find fuses related to Powersteering and how to inspect/test a fuse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

OP, how about you check with any local indy if they can take a look at the fuse with you?
Then you can learn while you watch them check the fuse and maybe do some other diagnoses.

Any battery centre will test your battery for free which would rule that one out. Approach caution with you tube videos as there are more misguiding than helpful most of the time.

Ok so I drove it down to halfords and I got a new battery for it, they fitted and all and now the car works again. It was a run down battery that caused the problem. This saved me money from having to spend on a mechanics time and fitting a new battery which halfords did for just 13 euro. So glad I took the plunge and spent money on new battery which only cost me 50 euros.

    Glad you got sorted.
But, to be fair to Mr negativety, he did have a point that a run down battery may not be the root cause but rather a symptom of something else. You'll know shortly enough either way but hopefully you're all sorted now.

Well done. I had a strong suspicion that's what the problem was. There's so many electronic parts in a modern car that the battery must be in good order for them all to run correctly.

Don't be afraid to ask any other questions you have.:)

Why the butthurt man? You come in with a very negative attitude and embark on a vendetta then when I say you had a point but that your attitude is negative? Grow up for yourself.

What positive contribution do have to my torques wrench query beyond "na-na-nana-na hurhurhur"....

Is there any ol cartoons you could be watching this morning? Because you're coming across as childish as well as negative here.
