Hi All, just saw an ad in donedeal for crew cab conversions in Naas. They are willing to recertify ML's, range rovers, sorento's etc. Chap called Nicky is the contact, anyone out there have any experience of them? Seems to be an awful lot of confusion about what can and can't be reclassified.

The regs were opened up massively a couple of years ago with respect to what could be classified as a commercial. The catch however is that the regs as to who can tax a crew cab as a commercial were also tightened up. Unless your business has a 'crew', you'll be paying private motor tax.

dunno about that, a fella around the corner from me has a toureg, DOE displayed on the window, 333 for the tax - and the rear seats put back in her - he is paye worker, has no crew at all. nice saving of about 700 skins per year on the tax.

It seems there can be problems taxing them unless you have VAT number etc. but a lot dependent on the person who deals with you in the tax office. There was a lot of talk about this last year we were told all vans and comm jeeps could only be used for work with no trips to the shops of bringing the child to school but not likely. For thousands of people around the county their van or jeep is their only means of transport so can't see them being made buy a private car anytime soon. Awful load of BS anyway, if you have the price of a new 5 seater disco, pajero or landcruiser you can have all the cheap tax u want!

I used Nicky mentioned in the first post to reclassify my Jeep. Got the SQI declaration etc. As others have mentioned the main problem is that some councils want different levels of detail in order to get it taxed. I am in Louth and first of all called the Dundalk office who's attitude stunk in my view and they were after all sorts of crap that was over and above the requirements.

So thought about it for another day or two, then my wife called Drogheda instead who were a lot more helpful and only asked for the usual declarations. It's all taxed etc now so happy days.

Probably the main thing I learned was that I should've called the council first then done the conversion - but hey it turned out OK in the end

can anyone quickly explain how the likes of an ML or X5 can be reclassified as a crew cab, and what difference would be made to the interior of the car ?

There's a European N1 classification for Commercial Vehicles. It's all to do with the load area to seating area ratio, ratio of load space length to wheelbase length, and the size of the rear opening. If it meets those criteria it can be classified as an N1 type commercial.

Eventually found the (complicated) regulations - http://www.nsai.ie/Our-Services-(1)/Certification/1--Automotive-files/M1-to-N1-conversions-Rev-02.aspx
