    Hi all,
If this is the wrong forum please move.

I have a garage door, installed 3 years ago, motor is gone and no warranty.

I got the installer to come out and check it and he said that the motor is gone, I've been onto him twice and no answer back on the motor, so I am going to have to do this myself.

Anyone any experience on what the motor size might be or advice.
I have to open the casing to have a look at it yet.

    Any advice appreciated.

Can you put up pics of the motor and model number. I might be able to help you source one.

Is it a roller door or up-and-over.

    Thanks lads,
I have to remove the rivets in the cover and get them details.
Its a roller door. I can wind it up at the minute manually but its a pig of thing to roll as its insulated.
    Its 3000 * 24000.

I might get that cover off tonight. I can't see it been a massive job to replace it... or am I been totally naive on that?
I've replaced motors and brushes in washing machines and lawnmowers so I am hoping its nothing drastically new.

There is hardly any brushes in the motor, it buzzes when I hit the up button on the remote. It doesn't go up. When I press the down button it buzzes loudly and goes down really slowly.

That sounds more like a gearing problem than the motor......ie. it's moving in one direction albeit slowly.
Perhaps it may be that the gear/pulley on the end of the rotor arm has worked loose.

Ummm, that is something that entered my head. They sent an engineer out who opened it and looked at it and reported "dead motor".

Be very careful of these set-ups. Normally the motor is just there for an assist, what usually does the heavy lifting is helical springs around the axle. These will take your head off if your not careful, been there, done that.

It does sound like the motor is attempting to run. From memory these motors have two different start winding one for CW the other for CCW. Is there any way to disengage the motor from the shutter to see how it runs by itself?

You could have the Motor rewound even to just keep as a spare. I''d imagine no more than 60 to 80 E to have done.

I get you on that, I need to get into it. I'm off work Friday so might get at it then to have a look.
Its definitely looking to run. I will see if I can get it off the shutter. It must run off belts or chain unless its around the pulley of the motor.

That could be a plan. I've been told off the record that I would be looking at 5-600 euro to get the motor replaced! Sounds extreme!

    Okay lads,
I took off the cover, well bent it out as best as I could, AWFUL yoke to squeeze out.
Definitly wasn't expecting to see what I did, but thats what lack of exp with roller doors is about!

    Video here:
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzMFHK8_TA9zMy1NczQta0RfZmM/view?usp=sharing

So its a tiny motor, how in the name of God I detach the roller from the motor is beyond me, I couldn't get in right to see. There was no model or make.
If I detach them white clips will the door piano down I wonder?
I presume I can take out the screws where its attached to the side panels and the full roller will come down.

Any insight appreciated or am I really at a stage where I have to call in the door lads, IF I can get them to do it!

This is an exact pic of it.

that price must be for travelling to and from base probably Dublin plus labour plus a new motor. There's not much too the Doors really, if you can take it down just remove the motor and have it rewound. I got a small motor rewound a year ago for 60 Euro.

    Hey thanks
The quote is from a Galway based company.

Stupid question, but can I detach the door from the roller and leave the door insitu or will it collapse down when I unclip it from the roller?
Am I just better off just unscrewing the full unit from the wall?
Just wondering do I need to take down side rails and all then?

They sound like a company going out of business fast at those prices. It should be in a track with rollers down the sides. Generally they're fitted panel by panel and joined together in place. So it shouldn't cause any problems if you can detach the roller. It's a two person job, Just be careful with the tension on the roller. Use a Vice grips or a stillson wrench to hold the tension while you remove the holding pins at the top of the Door.
You can usually lock it against the overhead frame. Then you can just refit it in reverse order without having to re tension the Springs.

    Thanks for the reply
Are you in the business yourself?
I will try and source the motor myself but hard when no PN or SN on it.

Not now but I have fitted and repaired plenty of Roller Shutters and Garage Doors in my time.
Is there a brand name on the Door.? Is the Motor built into the Roller.or is it attached to the shaft.

Door was supplied by these lads: http://www.shuttersanddoors.ie/
I can't find an exact name but its identical to the fitting on this guide here: http://easyfitgaragedoor.co.uk/installation/roller-doors/fitting-instructions.htm

And the motor seems to be attached from what I can see, its identical to this one here.

Whats annoying me now is that CS only have a 1 year warranty and any of the others seem to have a 5 year warranty! :(

It looks like the motor is built into the roller which means you're going to have to take it down. You'll have to secure the roller while you remove the cleats holding it to the top of the Door. Then release the tension on the roller slowley counting the revolutions until it's all released. Take down the roller and remove the motor.
Then just do everything in reverse.

    Cheers for that.
Still no joy in sourcing this motor!!! driving me mental! I've enquired in a few places.

If you take it out you might find a nameplate on it. But I wouldn't be too worried as you should be able to get it rewound. They may even tell you who the makers are.

Hi did you tried eBay? Just look for 'shutter door motor' prices there starting from 50 euro but make sure you find the correct one with power and size. If not there, my brother sell doors like this in Poland and I can ask him, but first try on ebay.

    Regards

    Hi
I've had no joy at all. Am I right in saying that in order to take out the motor that I need to take down the door?

CSShutters and Door Motion have been nothing short of useless now on this.

I haven't looked on Ebay as I can't get at the motor to take it out and its not labelled.
    This is the motor.

No you should be able to detach the Door from the Roller and remove just the roller. But to do so you need to secure the tension on the Roller otherwise it will uncoil quickly and could be dangerous to fingers.

    Okay, thanks for your help.
If you can mention the motor to your brother that would be great.
    Many thanks

I've got email from brother and he need a diameter of the roller, does have it an emergency opening ? Is there remote control receiver internal or external and what is the size of the single feather or weight of the door
I think there is no any springs so you can remove motor ( secure for sure ), just unhook hanger when door are closed and then you can remove bolts and take off the motor

    Thanks for the reply.
I've attached the spec I got off them, see if that helps.
It has a manual riser if that what he means by Emergency opening.
Receiver is a little box external to the door.
Im not sure what he means by single feather, is that the lath size? It says 77mm
I must remove the cover and get a right view of the door up where it is.

What sort of price are the motors, ball park?

    Thanks
