It's 100 years since the first ANZAC landing.

The services were very big this year.

I went to the Dawn Service & the Main Service as well. Here are some shots from the day.

    Lloyd Jones

Lloyd Jones served in the Air Force as a wireless operator in the Wellington bombers, flying out of Tunisia in the second world war.
Very few survived the designated 40 missions.

Lloyd carried out 19 trips before their plane exploded on a return landing, shrapnel taking out his right eye. Crew leapt to the ground to run clear in the darkness.

He and rear gunner Ryan collided, then “looking back we saw the whole plane being consumed by fire – ammunition going off with bullets and tracer shooting everywhere. At the same moment we saw a figure fall from the forward hatch and lie prone. We dashed over and pulled the Navigator, Allen Spencer, clear of the plane”.

The rest of the war for Lloyd was spent in various hospitals with operations to repair the damaged eye socket.

“I do know of the hideous perpetual roar of the engines and the alarming creaking and groaning of the plane as it lumbered down the rough clay-pan laden with fuel and up to 5,000lb of bombs. The noise of 6-10 Wellingtons warming up, the pall of dust and the flickering lights were a fearsome sight”

Lloyd's father was wounded on the first day at Gallipoli.
