Obese and broke a bed

I'm a guy and weight about 105kg which is about 16 and a half stone. I rent a single room in a house share and am happy there. I know I am overweight and am working on it.

I don't have a chair or desk in the room. My computer is on a locker and I sit on the edge of my bed. This evening the wooden boards just collapsed and cracked and the mattress fell through the bed.

I'll call the landlord but will I be humiliated that this is my fault? Maybe it us. Though Ive rented other places and never had an issue.

Is a single bed expected to deal with this weight?

In my experience, I wouldn't consider 105 kg to be outside the limits of a single bed. For me, it's probably more of a sign of a cheap bed frame with thin wooden lats.

OP here and thanks for the reply.

Im not sure what lats are but if you mean the wooden boards under the mattress then yes, they cracked and collapsed.

All I was doing was sitting on the edge of the bed, nothing more

The house was not in the best state of repair when I moved in and so I guess my bed is a really cheap kind. Never ever had this issue anywhere else.

I will call the landlord :)

I would have thought a single bed should be more than capable of dealing with this weight, it's probably more due to the cheap bed frame than anything to do with you! I was in a single bed for years in college and often shared it with my bf at the time, our combined weight would have been over 20 stone, and there was never an issue!

Just call him and tell him it's been rickety for a while and eventually collapsed.

My husband is famous for sitting heavily on beds and breaking them. He isnt remotely overweight but he is a big guy. Its not just the bodyweight but the force with which someone sits down that can do the damage!

Anyway, I wouldnt be stressing, sounds like a cheap bed frame more than anything else.

OP, how tall are you? Unless your quite short, I'm not sure if 105Kg would class you as obese.

I remember in the last place I rented, on the first day I sat down on the double bed and crack it went and I'm about 80kg. So it can and does happen OP. Sounds like a cheapo bed issue more than anything else.

16 and a half stone isn't bantamweight but there are rugby players who weigh more than that. That bed sounds like it's rubbish - a couple where one is 11 stone and the other is 8 stone would have broken it.

Is it a child's bed?

Its a single bed, it wouldnt be big enough for a couple.

I'm tall and weigh a little less. if you have wooden slats in your bed you just need to go to ikea or whatever and replace them. and the solution is to buy two sets next time, problem solved.

Ring the landlord/lady. This happens with cheap beds especially the ones where the lats underneath slot in to the sides of the bed frame. I am about half your weight and same thing happened to me in one of the beds in my house. I was able to fix it in my case as it was basiclaly the lats had come loose and had not actually broken. if they are broken it may need to be replaced

It's more to do with where you sit. 16 stone lying on all the slats means that your weight is distributed. 16 stone on 1 slat that's approx 1/2 inch thick will break it. Just fix it yourself

some things are just poorly constructed

I'm under 12 stone and I've broken those wooden planks under a mattress before. They're are about as strong as a piece of plywood.

there are groups every where, look it up.

This in a nutshell. My sister is about 8 stone, and she stood up on her bed to change her lightbulb and one of the slats broke right where she stood on it. Her bed is a decent enough one too, so it's easily done.

If it's just the slats, I'd have a go at replacing it yourself before contacting the landlord. If the actual bed frame is damaged, then you'll have to call him. Going forward, would it be better to sit on your bed as if you were reading a book before going asleep, and put your laptop on something like this, so not only would your weight be distributed more evenly on the bed and reduce the risk of breaking it, it would probably be way more comfortable.

I'm 6f5 and 98kg and 10% bodyfat (little over at the moment) If my bed broke I wouldn't think twice about calling the landlord. As you said all you were doing was sitting on it, it's not like you were jumping up and down.

Its a common enough problem witb beds. Im 85ish kg and my bed has an extra set of slats I kept from an old bed that I was throwing out a few years ago. They are thin pieces of wood no surprise to see them break every so often.

its not your fault man, dont beat yourself down over a ****ty bed, ive intentionally broken beds before with wwe style dives and im well over 16 stone and it rarely goes on the first try ha, get onto the landlord its his fault not yours

This happened me also, at 4 a.m in the morning, half asleep and right after straining the spuds. Not a nice experience. Woke me right up, and the wife wasn't happy aswell. 100% call the landlord, I cannot see any issue here if they are half decent. You'll be grand lad, has happened a load of us. Typically a sh!te frame. Go into the kitchen and check what sort of a washing machine is there, as I could nearly guarantee that is bog standard aswell. The lesson: it's very typical to have the lowest of the lowest quality fit out in your average rental property. The landlord will know the score.
